Colman Domingo says his Met Gala outfit pays tribute to both the late Chadwick Boseman and André Leon Talley

This year marks the "Rustin" star's debut at fashion's big night.

There's an extra special meaning behind Colman Domingo's 2024 Met Gala look.

The Rustin star revealed that he chose to wear a white cape to fashion's big night on Monday in honor of two late Black icons, Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman and fashion journalist and Vogue alum André Leon Talley. Boseman died in 2020 at the age of 43 from colon cancer. Talley passed away in 2022 aged 73 from complications of a heart attack.

"They both wore capes when they were at the Met," Colman told E! on the red carpet. "Everything I do, I feel like it's gotta be for the culture. It's gotta be more than just for me."  

The actor told the outlet that this year marks his first time at the Met Gala, and as such he "wanted to honor these brothers who were here before me as well."

Domingo also told E! he was excited to sit with tablemates Cardi B and Erykah Badu. "I've never met Cardi B and I'm really gagging," he said. "I think I might just expire right there at the table."

The theme of this year's event is “The Garden of Time,” paired with the new Met exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion." Domingo wore a custom Willy Chavarria creation that features black calla lilies on his white suit, mirroring the bouquet of real white lilies he held in his hand.

The annual event, which serves to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute (and, yes, give celebrities a chance to live out their wildest haute couture dreams), was co-chaired this year by Anna Wintour, Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Zendaya.
