Adam Peaty accused of disrespecting Commonwealth Games after roaring into breaststroke final

Adam Peaty accused of disrespecting Commonwealths after roaring into 50m breaststroke final - SHUTTERSTOCK

Adam Peaty roared back at those writing him off after cruising through his 50 metres breaststroke semi-final – but was later accused of being disrespectful towards Commonwealth Games competitors.

“You back a lion into a corner, they’re going to bite,” said a defiant Peaty after bouncing back from a surprise fourth-place finish in the 100m breaststroke final.

Peaty could yet claim a Commonwealth gold after beating his Sunday night conqueror James Wilby by 0.62sec. The three-time Olympic gold medallist is still processing Sunday’s disappointment and, while he acknowledged he may have expected too much on his comeback from a broken foot, he also questioned his hunger for success.

“I’m backed into a corner now but I’m OK with that,” said Peaty. “You think ‘do I want to be here? Do I love the sport as much as I did?’ I don’t know. Those questions, I have to address.

“I haven't really had a winter block where I've reset. I haven't even had a chance to know where I'm going, it's almost like you get in a car without a destination.”

He added: “It will probably be my last [Commonwealths] attempt tomorrow. But I am not bothered because, Commonwealths? For me? In the grand scheme of things, it is about two years’ time [the Olympics]. And that is no disrespect.”

Those words were criticised by BBC pundit Mark Foster, who said: “I think he is trying to say to himself it does not matter, but it does. The Commonwealth Games is a big deal. It comes across as disrespectful to other people, people like James Wilby who beat him and became Commonwealth champion.”

Peaty also expressed annoyance regarding the wait time on the dive board in his semi-final, where he was more than a second slower than his personal best of 25.95 secs he recorded five years ago.

Speaking to the BBC, Peaty said: “"They really need to do something about the starter, it is getting ridiculous now. I am not one to complain. But you are getting held on that block for a 50m and you are like this [mimes being tense and poised]. You never get held that long anywhere. We have to adapt.

"Hopefully it is better tomorrow. But you cannot get a good result when you are there for three seconds trying to pounce off. "

England’s Monday night gold in the pool came courtesy of Maisie Summers-Newton in the 100m Breaststroke SB6 final – another dominant performance from the Paralympic Champion. Elsewhere, Abbie Wood claimed bronze in the women’s 200m individual medley.

Commonwealth Games day four – as it happened

09:37 PM

That will conclude the live blog action

for this evening. An exciting day, we had Dame Laura Trott rolling back the years for a thrilling late win. Adam Peaty getting back in the pool and back on the horse. Some tremendous England golds in gymnastics: Jarman on men's floor, Fraser on pommel horse, Tulloch on rings and Fenton on uneven bars. Weightlifting and judo both delivered for the home nations. There were enjoyable matches in hockey and netball.

Thanks for following this with me. On behalf of me, Alan Tyers, and Katya Witney, goodnight.

09:33 PM

Kate Rowan is on Royal Watch!

"This correspondent had the good fortune of receiving a smile from HRH Princess Anne at the Open Championship at St Andrews almost three weeks ago. And it would seem Telegraph Sport has a good knack at Royal watching as we spotted The Earls of Wessex Prince Edward entering the Sandwell Aquatics centres at around 9pm - he was looking in very good spirits chatting with staff. The volunteers here have done Trojan work here. The Prince has been busy at the Commonwealth Games watching the rugby sevens with his older sister Princess Anne on Friday. "

09:23 PM

Right then: men's team relay to finish

Here come the swimming teams. Wales are in lane three. The Scots in two. England in five. Freestyle to start. Aussies in four. Saffers in their too.

Aussies put one of their strongest to start, the commentator says, and England and Scotland both keeping the big guns back.

Oh! There's Chad Le Clos for South Africa.

Australia are leading, Wales second, South Africa third with two men left to swim each.

At 550m, the Aussies are waltzing this. England coming into bronze contention.

Aussie last man in is in and Tom Dean for England has got it all to do! He is eating into that Aussie lead but it feels like he has played his hand early. Duncan Scott for the Scots, now, is getting involved. England, Wales and Scotland all battling hard for silver, but the Aussies are too strong here. They come home in style for a gold. Silver for England and an excellent bronze for Scotland.

Gibraltar coming home last a good 100m behind the leaders.

09:11 PM

The action in the pool

rounds off tonight with the final of the men's 4x200m freestyle. The Aussies, unsurprisingly and indeed regrettably, are warm favourites. Presumably no chance of them dropping the baton.

09:06 PM

The BBC are

showing the goals from the hockey earlier. England's lads were 4-1 down and came back to stun India 4-4. Some brilliant individual moments.

09:03 PM

Recap on Laura Kenny

Laura Kenny claimed England’s first cycling gold of the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games with a fantastic sprint finish in the women’s 10km scratch race.

England’s Grace Lister put in an attack with four laps left, along with Scotland’s Neah Evans. Lister was unable to keep on Evans’ wheel as she continued to power away. Lewis and Kenny managed to reel Evans back in, with Kenny soaring past and putting in an incredible injection of pace to take gold.

Michaela Drummond of New Zealand gave chase but was unable to match Kenny’s unbelievable speed as she crossed the line with ease in a perfectly executed race. Evans took fourth after her commendable effort.

Afterwards, a delighted Kenny, who had taken the adoration of the home crowd, said:

“It feels amazing. I came in this morning in a completely different mindset, thinking, ‘of course you can do it.’ I told myself in the toilet, ‘you need to race as Laura Trott,’ that old bike rider who didn’t think about anything else other than crossing that finish line first. When I changed my mindset, I just felt completely different.

"When Sophie and the other England rider rolled over, everything was on my side. Then Sophie drops in and I’m like, ‘we’ve done it, I’ve won this bike race.’ Honestly I was just so happy, to be able to do it here in London."

08:51 PM

Emma McKeon

has become the most successful Commonwealth Games swimmer ever. 12 golds, 17 medals in total.

08:50 PM

The medals come thick and fast in the pool

Jeffcoat of New Zealand wins the men's 50m backstroke.

And here comes the women's 50m butterfly Emma McKeon of Australia has won that as well! I make that her fourth gold this games.

08:41 PM

Weightlifting GOLD for Sarah Davies!

She has completed the 126kg clean and jerk which gives her a total of 229kg.

Canada's Alexis Ashworth will get silver and India's Harjinder Kaur takes bronze.

08:40 PM

Away from the pool, weightlifting

In the women's 71 kg, it's down to England's Sarah Davies and Nigeria's Joy Ogbonne Eze.

Joy Ogbonne Eze has missed her last chance to clean-and-jerk 125Kg. So it's a huge opportunity for Sarah...

08:32 PM

Maisie Summers-Newton wins

Maisie Summers-Newton has wins gold in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke SB6 final, another dominant performance from the Paralympic Champion.

08:24 PM

A battling win in the squash

Rod Gilmour writes: "Defending champ James Willstrop, 39 next month in this most brutal of sports, into the men's singles semis. Thrilling 3-2 win over Scot Rory Stewart. Cock-a-hoop at the end, rare show of emotion and celebration for a QF. Chapeau!"

Kate Rowan

"Fun fact for those who are a bit pedantic like me. Each medalist is presented with a soft toy that is a little replica of Games mascot Perry. However, unlike the Perry cuddlies that can be purchased here in Birmingham - the medalists get a special-edition coloured gold, silver and bronze. It looked like Tom Dean – who is building quite the collection - gave his Perry from tonight away to someone in the crowd he seems to know.

"The Englishman looked to be really enjoying himself post the medal ceremony with Scott and Chalmers as the trio walked a customers lap of the pool laughing and waving to the crowd.

"It was notable considering the Australian’s rift with the media how he moved very quickly by the press benches. No waves for the Aussie media!"

08:12 PM

Here we go for the women's individual medley

It's over 200m, so that's a length for each discipline.

McKeown and McIntosh are in the major places but England's Abby Wood is putting up a terrific fight in third. The Canadian Summer McIntosh has stormed home in gold, McKeown holds on for the silver and that's a really game effort from Wood for the bronze.

08:00 PM

BBC pundit reaction to those 'disrespect' comments

Mark Foster on BBC: "I think he is trying to say to himself it does not matter but it does. It is a big multi-sport event. The Commonwealth Games is a big deal. It comes across as disrespectful to other people, people like James Wilby who beat him last night and became Commonwealth Champion."

Becky Adlington: "He does not mean to be disrespectful, I don't think he knows what he is chasing. He has got all the medals. You achieve everything and then you go, what now? And I think he is trying to figure that out."

07:45 PM

Starter seems a bit gun-shy

at the pool. They are holding a lot of the races for a second or two before firing the gun, meaning the competitors are left hanging on the starting block.

commonwealth games 2022 day four live cycling swimming medal updates - PA
commonwealth games 2022 day four live cycling swimming medal updates - PA

Here is Adam Peaty:

"They really need to do something about the starter, it is getting ridiculous now. I am not one to complain. But you are getting held on that block for a 50m and you are like this [mimes being tense and poised]. You never get held that long anywhere. We have to adapt. Hopefully it is better tomorrow. But you cannot get a good result when you are there for three seconds trying to pounce off. "

"Job done here. Now back to bed. It is only a 50m breast so I am not going to overthink it, it is just one length of the bath. I don't feel amazing but I don't feel bad either. It is the one I have missed out on. It will probably be my last [Commonwealth] attempt tomorrow. But I am not bothered about it because, Commonwealths? For me? In the grand scheme of things it is about two years time. And that is no disrespect. Just four weeks I am out of a [rehab] boot."

07:41 PM

Here's Kate on Adam Peaty

"There was an odd flashback to Wimbledon at the late 1990s and early 2000s here at Sandwell Aquatics centre as "c'mon Adam" was cheered in much the same way Tim Henman was sent love back in the day on Centre Court. Peaty was back on top and it was notable how much more comfortable he looked over 50 m than in the 100 metres due to recovering from a foot injury. Just one length is suiting him in his current condition."

07:37 PM

Kaylee McKeown

Who won the 200m backstroke just now, will go in the individual medley final at just after 8pm.

07:33 PM

Away from the pool

Acelya Toprak is going for gold in the judo at 60kg this evening.

And there are also medals to be lifted in the women's weightlifting under 71kg.

07:25 PM

Kate Rowan in Birmingham

Here's m'colleague Kate Rowan reporting from the swimming pool. In the seats near it, I should say; I don't think they let the press pack get their water wings on.

Over to you, Kate:

"Considering how outnumbered they are by the home support - the Australian swimming team really made a point of being heard from the stands here at the Sandwell Aquatics centre as they cheered on their colleague Kyle Chalmers to 100 metres freestyle gold ahead of Englishman Tom Dean in silver and his friend and Team GB team-mate Scotland's Duncan Scott. The Australian support is noteworthy as Chalmers has had a spat with the Aussie media over the past few days over rumours there had been a split in the camp. They are certainly very united tonight. Chalmers had the final say as he put his fingers to lips to hush his critics. "

07:20 PM

Adam Peaty

goes in the 50m breaststroke semi-final.

How's the foot? How's the head?

Better, by the looks. He wins that with the minimum of fuss.

All England top three with James Wilby and Greg Butler ahead of Ross Murdoch in fourth.

The final is NOT tonight by the way.

07:19 PM

Now the final of the women's 200m backstroke

The Olympic champ is in lane four, Kaylee McKeown. Kylie Masse of Canada is the defending Commonwealth Champion and Olympic silver medalist.

Those two are a class above and are having their own private duel, and it's McKeown who wins it. Haats off to Katie Shanahan for a battling bronze.

07:09 PM

We turn now to swimming

Tom Dean of England comes out for the 100m freestyle, and gets a big cheer for doing so.

Tom Dean has been pipped for silver by Chalmers of Australia, apparently he's had some sort of bust up with the Aussie media. A bronze medal for Scotland's Duncan Scott.

Chalmers threatened to quit the sport because he didn't like some tabloidy stories about his love life.

07:01 PM

On the menu tonight

Duncan Scott is in action in the pool. Tom Dean goes tonight as well. Of course, Peaty will be looking revenge in the 50m breast after shock defeat last night.

06:58 PM

Here's Dame Laura Kenny's medal CV

06:53 PM

Coming up

We have got action in the pool this evening and will make that our main focus.

There's also weightlifting, netball and badminton.

In the women's under 64 kg weightlifting, the battler Zoe Smith came in fourth. Charron of Canada set a Games Record in first place.

06:36 PM

Update from women's bowls at Leamington Spa

The Aussie woman won. Well done her. She's done a Pat Cash and clambered into the stands to hug her friends and family.

06:30 PM

To Leamington Spa, for women's bowls

and news of a potential medal for Guernsey. Lucy Beere is locked in a neck-and-neck final with Aussie Ellen Ryan.

AND IT'S LIVE!

06:21 PM

Our attention was on the track cycling

So didn't get a chance to watch the end of the hockey: England's men came back to draw 4-4 with India which must have been a bit of a classic.

06:18 PM

Track Cycling Medal Table

Eight golds each for the Aussies and the Kiwis. Four silvers for the NZ boys and girls, so they'll top that table, right?

Just the one gold for the English. This woman.

06:17 PM

Judo: gold and silver for Englishmen

In the men's -60kg final, England team-mates Ashley McKenzie and Sam Hall fought for the gold, and it was Ashley who came out on top.

06:15 PM

England and Northern Ireland

are playing netball against each other currently. The English are ahead.

06:13 PM

Final lap

Aaron Gate is the winner. Campbell Stewart gets silver. And Ollie Wood, who gave so much throughout the race, has to settle for the bronze behind the two Kiwis.

06:08 PM

Here comes Mark Stewart of Scotland

He's joined that front two - who both look like they are feeling the pain now - and Mark is making his presence felt.

06:02 PM

As it stands

Gate of NZ is leading, Ollie Wood of England has second most points, then another Kiwi Campbell Stewart.

The first two have made a break and are about half a lap ahead of the field.

33 laps to go

06:00 PM

The points race is hard to follow

And it must be a bloody nightmare to administer! There's riders everywhere, they have to see who has got over the line first at multiple times of the action. Scotland's Mark Stewart is the defending champion.

05:48 PM

Let's turn now to the 40km

men's points race. There are 83 laps to go.

Gate of NZ is on the lead, Wood of England in second.

Basically you pedal around for about a billion miles and then occasionally you do a sprint. You get points based on how you do in the races-within-a-race sections. It's basically interval training, right?

05:43 PM

The otherwise flawless Hazel Irvine

Has just incorrectly credited Sir Alex Ferguson with the coining of the word "bouncebackability". It was, of course, Davros Dowie who came up with this one.

05:33 PM

Toff of the track!

Good story here from Ben Bloom about a Nigerian chap. In fact, I cannot improve on this excellently economical headline.

Tade Ojora, the Nigerian 'royal' who went to Eton and now wants gold for England

05:26 PM

England's men have pulled

a goal back in the hockey against India; it's 4-2.

05:24 PM

Chris Hoy on Laura

"Laura has been there and done it all before. She’s won it at every possible level, but you can see what it means to her - that response from the crowd."

There is still a 40km points race for the men to come on the track.

05:20 PM

Tom Cary on Laura Kenny

"She said she was going "terribly" after Friday's team pursuit, and her 13th place in yesterday's points race seemed to back up that assessment. But you can't keep Dame Laura Kenny down.

The five-time Olympic champion surged through the field on the final lap of the women's scratch race, chasing down and then passing GB team mate Neah Evans (Scotland) to claim the second Commonwealth title of her career.

After all the stress yesterday, the crashes and unease, the roar of the crowd as Kenny made her move on the last lap was like a pent-up release of emotion. "

05:19 PM

That was one of the moments

of the Games so far. Drama, seizing the opportunity, and pure racing instincts from Dame Laura. She knew, and she delivered. Even out of form and out of sorts, she has the winner's mentality. A pure breed sportsperson.

05:00 PM

Dame Laura Kenny speaks to the BBC

"I cannot believe it. Last night, I said to Jase 'this is going to be my last race'. When I watched Adam Peaty last night I completely reflected on his interview and I thought 'that is me, that is me all over'. I have lost the spark, training does not come that easy, every day I am like 'here we go again'. I have been there, three Olympic cycles now, to keep picking yourself up after this whole year it has just honestly been a nightmare. I had absolutely lost motivation.

"And then, last night, I was messaging my new coach, Lem, and I went 'No! I am not giving up. I am not giving up on this. I have got one more roll of the dice, just tell me.' It could not have been better set up if it tried, could it? Grace is a young rider and I said, you go early, you do you, don't worry about me. And then Sophie rolled over and I thought hallelujiah. It is literally unfolding in front of me. And then when Neah went, from about two laps out, I thought 'I've done it'. To cross the line here, to do it here in London, I could not ask for more.

"I know what it is like to lose here. Yesterday was a bad taste to be honest. I was not in the right frame of wind. To see Wallsy (Matt Walls) crash like that, it really makes you think what am I doing. I have been lucky in my career, I have had one broken shoulder and one broken arm. It really has not been that bad. And you see something like that. I messaged Monica straight away and said I was having a serious confidence crisis, I just did not want to be on the track. And when I feel like that I race badly. And I do not get a result."

"But today, I was so fired up. I kept saying to myself in the toilet: I can do this, I can do this. Obviously because I have got no points I was miles back at the start and some man on the track was like 'You've got this Laura' and I wanted to turn to him and say 'yes I have!' I felt like a completely different bike rider."

04:51 PM

Women's scratch

So they restart and a 40 lap race has become a 20 lap one, so this will play into the hands of the sprinters.

Three riders break away. Laura Kenny nicely placed. The Aussies reel in the breakaway trio.

Final lap.... Scotland's Neah Evans has made a breakaway. What have the field got? LAURA KENNY takes it up! Go'orn Laura. She's going to do this, she is holding off some stiff challenges and she is crossing the line in gold medal place.

Drummond of New Zealand is the woman who crosses the line in second place. Coles-Lyster of Canada for the bronze. Hard lines for Evans, who has to settled for fouth.

Women's scratch clash crash

Grace Shearman and Wales' Megan Barker made a break, Kenny led the chase.

India's Meenakshi Meenakshi went down and slid. New Zealand's Bryony Botha smashed into and went over the handlebars. She was a contender for this, and had already won pursuit gold.

04:38 PM

Women's scratch

Barker of Wales and Sherman of New Zealand have made a break. CRASH!

A rider from India and a rider from New Zealand have hit the deck.

The race has been slowed down, or "neutralised" in the jargon.

Meenakshi Meenakshi and Bryony Botha the women who crash out. The Kiwis rider seems to be a bit dinged up but is on her feet. Paramedics still attending to Meenakshi of India.

04:32 PM

Women's track cycling

They are off in the women's track race. 40 laps. The, erm, narrative yet to form. Or it is to my untutored eye, anyway. Some women are pedalling around a track but nobody is making her move just yet. 22 laps to go now.

04:08 PM

Track cycling

We are into the second round of the women's keirin and Lauren Bell is Scotland's only remaining rider in the second round of the keirin. Sir Chris Hoy reveals that Lauren is riding the same bike that he used to win the gold in 2012. And in the same track as well.

You got to like that for some form, right?

04:05 PM

Big match in the hockey

right now as England face India.

04:01 PM

On the rings, Joe Fraser

Finishes his routine with a double twisting double back and that foot injury holds up well on the landing. That is a strong medal bid from Joe there.

03:55 PM

Basketball

England's men will play Canada later tonight for a place in the final.

03:55 PM

Also in the gymnasium

some women's uneven bars.

03:53 PM

Gymnastics now

And it's the men's rings final. Jersey's Dan Lee with an excellent routine.

That was some performance from Joe Fraser in the men's pommel horse final. Northern Ireland's Rhys McClenaghan a worthy silver; he had an interesting journey to these Games, there was a dispute about him having previously represented Ireland. World Gymnastics Body not too up on their GFA by the sounds of it. It got sorted.

03:47 PM

Talking of the Aussies

they are well ahead atop the medal table: 56 medals so far, 23 of them golds. All this AND the highly successful Neighbours finale, what a week.

03:46 PM

Track cycling

coming up now.

03:42 PM

Bowls!

Thanks Katya, great job, and now we turn our attention to one of the most enduringly Commonwealthy Commonwealth Games sports, lawn bowls.

It is England versus Australia, and you join us as England's men secure the Gold medal by beating the men from Down Under. Ashes glory, you love to see it.

03:16 PM

Joe Fraser receives gold medal

Fraser of course is all smiles as he's given rapturous applause by the crowd. He poses on the podium with Rhys McCleneghan and bronze medalist Jayson Rampersad. What a story the athlete from Birmingham has.

I'll hand you over to Alan Tyers for the rest of the day.

03:12 PM

Men's 1000m cycling final underway

We're well into the velodrome programme for this afternoon and the latest event is the men's 1000m time trial. Just three riders have set times so far, two of which are England's Ethan Vernon and Joe Holt of Wales. Vernon currently in top position with Holt in second 0.004 seconds back.

03:05 PM

GOLD MEDAL FOR ENGLAND'S JOE FRASER

commonwealth games 2022 day four live cycling swimming medal updates - AFP

There's nothing Ethan Dick can do to knock Joe Fraser off the top step! The Birmingham local who went to primary school just around the corner from where he will be awarded a Commonwealth gold medal is a very popular winner.

He had to withdraw from the men's rings final which will take place later because of that broken foot. He also burst his appendix five weeks ago. Just absolutely extraordinary.

03:03 PM

Hall out of medal contention but bronze for Shannon Archer

Canada's Jayson Rampersad nails his routine and goes into third position. Not to be for Hall but he has that gold and silver from the previous events.

It's bronze for Scotland's Shannon Archer in the women's vault final! She has an anxious wait before her score is announced but she will be going home with that medal. The first Scottish women ever to be awarded and artistic gymnastics Commonwealth Games medal.

02:59 PM

Error sees Joe Truman down to ride after bone-breaking crash

Tom Cary at the velodrome:

It seems scarcely believable that Joe Truman should be back on his bike in the men's kilo two days after knocking himself unconscious in the keirin... and indeed it is a mistake. Team England have just confirmed to me that Truman will not be riding. It is merely an administrative error.

02:54 PM

Hall in bronze position

13.433 - bronze medal position. Two gymnasts now between James Hall and a third Commonwealth gold medal. Remarkable after picking up that ankle injury yesterday.

02:52 PM

Hall through pommel horse routine

Hall is hunting for a medal. His legs are locked through the first part of the routine but they just sneak apart towards the end. He nails the dismount though.

That may just be another medal for Hall. McClenaghan is in silver with a score of 14.133, lets see if he can beat that.

02:49 PM

Not to be for Moore

Jesse Moore is onto the pommel horse and looks really good. The crowd ooh and ahh as he goes through his routine in double quick time but as he goes for the handstand at the end he just can't pull his body up into position. He get's the dismount on the second attempt but that will have lowered his score significantly. Such a shame because that probably would've been a medal.

McClenaghan's appeal has been rejected by the way.

James Hall about to step up to the apparatus.

It's half-time in the men's hockey clash between Scotland and South Africa. Scotland need to win this to stand any chance of qualifying for the semi-finals but goals from Nicholas Spooner and Dayaan Cassiem have dashed their hopes. Still two quarters to go but it looks like they're headed out.

02:38 PM

Nearly time for James Hall

It does. McClenaghan's score is 14.133 and he slots into second. Fraser still in first. Jesse Moore is next up to the pommel horse and he'll be followed by James Hall. Can England get another gymnastics 1-2? Fraser is warming up.

McClenaghan has put in an enquiry on the difficulty score on his routine. He was given a 5.600 which for a Commonwealth champion seems a bit low but we'll see.

02:33 PM

Fraser into first position

It's a 14.833. That will be incredibly difficult to beat but the reigning Commonwealth champion, Rhys McCleneghan of Northern Ireland is up next. Let's see what he can do.

It looks good but he does separate his legs slightly in the middle of the routine. Will that cost him?

02:30 PM

Joe Fraser through his pommel horse routine

Straight away he's up into the hand stand and then starts to circle his legs round and round the apparatus. His legs are tight together and he's making it look effortless. He includes a pirouette in the dismount and nails it. Huge, huge routine. So much difficulty in there.

We wait for the score but it must be a big one.

02:27 PM

Two gymnastics finals running currently

The women's vault final is happening alongside the men's pommel horse. Pranati Nayak and Laurie Denommee are the two gymnasts to run so far. Denommee is about to start her second vault.

Cara Kennedy and Shannon Archer will compete for Scotland in this.

Men's pommel horse final begins

Kenji Tamane is the first gymnast up to the apparatus. Oh no... he makes a mistake, clipping the pommel with his legs and he's off. He get's back on to finish the routine and does well in the handstand to finish. He looks very disappointed with himself.

Joe Fraser and James Hall are the English athletes in this event. Both won gold in the men's team final on Friday, Fraser coming back from a burst appendix and is competing on a broken foot. He says he's hardcore, I'm inclined to agree

02:18 PM

Last day of velodrome action starts

The women's kerin first round has got us underway at Lee-Valley and Scotland's Lauren Bell and Milly Tanner of England fail to automatically qualify for the semi-final. Both will have another shot through the repechages.

Laura Kenny will be riding in the scratch race later alongside Neah Evans

Yes they can! Chestney with the winning shot and the Australian's are long on their final shot. England take the gold! All three players run across the green to hug each other before shaking their opponent's hands. Wow what a gold rush in the last half and hour!

Chris Murray reacts to winning weightlfting gold this morning

Murray spoke to the media after winning the men's 81kg final this morning:

"I can’t sum it up. I’ll be in my room tonight still not being able to put it into words. It’s truly incredible.

“I got back to my platform where I’d been warming up and I just collapsed. To come out and hit personal bests on the biggest stage, I’m so overwhelmed with that feeling and I didn’t even care what medal I got at that point because I’d done what I needed to do.

“It (the crowd) was something I’ve never experienced and I don’t think I’ll experience it again unfortunately. It was incredible, so, so loud. I had to take a moment to compose myself.

Jarman receives his third gold medal

He's joined on the podium by compatriot Giarnni Regini-Moran who takes home the bronze and Canada's Felix Dolci finished second. Dolci's routine looked so good and his score of 14.166 was so strong he must be gutted not to be on that top step.

Jarman was just too good, as he has been for the entirety of the games. The men's pommel horse final is up next which will feature James Hall. He injured his ankle in the all-round event yesterday but said he would compete today. Let's hoping he's made a good recovery overnight.

Australia mounting comeback in bowls final

England were 12-4 up in the men's tripples bowls final half-an-hour ago but they haven't scored a point since then. The score-line now stands at 12-11 and Australia are right back in it. This could be a very tense finish.

01:43 PM

Ben Bloom reacts to Jarman's spectacular games

The fun thing about the Covid pandemic (please excuse the total ridiculousness of those few words) is that young sportspeople can suddenly seem to spring up from nowhere, having developed behind closed doors while the world was locked down.

That is exactly what has happened to Jake Jarman, who is rapidly becoming British gymnastics' new star. Having already won team and all-around gold, he has just earned a third title for England with a spectacular floor routine.

And it might not end there. Jarman, 20, has also qualified highest for tomorrow's vault final. Could he leave Birmingham as a quadruple gold medalist?

01:37 PM

JAKE JARMAN IS A TRIPPLE COMMONWEALTH CHAMPION

A slight delay while Nothern Ireland's Aiden Montgomery submits an appeal to the judges regarding his score, but finally confirmation. Jake Jarman has another gold medal!

He looks slightly less shocked than yesterday, he must be getting used to this by now.

01:33 PM

Jarman in gold medal spot!

It's huge! 14.666 and Jarman is miles ahead of Dolci. Surely that's enough for gold... just one more athlete to go, Clay Mason Stephens of Australia up to the floor...

01:29 PM

Jarman with a huge routine

commonwealth games 2022 day four live cycling swimming medal updates - REUTERS

He's geeted by a huge cheer befitting of a double Commonwealth Champion and gets straight into the routine. He flies from corner to corner, flipping and tumbling.

Wow!! That's a strong routine! Felix Dolci put in a mega routine earlier and currently sits in gold medal position with a score of 14.166. We await the score to see if Jarman can claim another gold medal

01:27 PM

Men's gymnastics floor final...

The gymnastics hall at the NEC has been a happy hunting ground for England so far in this games and Jake Jarman is back in action. After winning gold yesterday he's up for another medal in the men's floor final! Fellow English gymnast Giarnni Regini-Moran currently sits in second position. Jarman is about to start his routine...

01:24 PM

Hall into judo final

England's Sam Hall has made it into the final of the men's 60kg judo competition with a dominant 10-0 victory over Petros Christodoulides. We'll have to wait to see who his opponent in that match will be. The final is set to take place at around 5pm.

01:20 PM

It's currently very close in the second, the English athlete doing everything he can to keep in touch with Tze who is currently 11-9 up.

A 12-0 victory for Scotland women has put them on equal points with New Zealand and Australia in Pool B - both have played one game fewer.

It was the seven goals in the first quarter that did it for them. Kenya didn't stand a chance after that.

England's Abbie Wood and Alicia Wilson have qualified for the 200m individual medley final which will take place tonight. They will lineup alongside Summer McIntosh from Canada who is just 15-years-old. She easily won the heat and definitely could become this games' youngest winner tonight.

Earlier on Chad le Clos qualified for the men's 100m butterfly semi-final. He'll be looking for another record to make him the most decorated Commonwealth athlete of all-time outright after he equaled the record with silver in the 200m butterfly last night.

The first match in the team semi-final tie between England and Malaysia is still going on and it is very tight. Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith won the first set but Peng Soon Chan and Yee See Cheah struck back in the second. We're in the final stages of the last set and while it's been incredibly close throughout, the England duo are just starting to lose momentum. Malaysia are 10-6 up.

12:06 PM

Australia in action on the netball court

In another hall at the NEC to where Chris Murray has just received his gold medal, Australia and South Africa are going head-to-head in Pool A of the netball.

Favourites Australia have comfortably won both their matches so far putting them at the top of the pool. South Africa lost their opening match against Jamaica but claimed victory against Barbados.

Chris Murray, the four-time British champion is now the Commonwealth champion.

Disappointment for Nicholas Vachon and Kyle Bruce, they were both so, so close to that top step but Murray grins as he steps up instead. He looks like he can't quite believe it, his face overcome with emotion. He's greeted by a huge roar from the crowd before the medal is hung round his neck. He wipes his eyes before the anthem is played. Very emotional for the 23-year-old.

11:56 AM

Cycling crash update

After yesterday's awful crash at the velodrome, Tom Cary has this from the Stratford this morning:

Just bumped into Canadian rider Derek Gee while walking from Stratford train station to velodrome for last day of Commonwealths track cycling. He was one of three riders hospitalised in that massive crash yesterday. Good to see him laughing and joking with his teammates. His face was quite bashed up and his right arm was in a sling but he said it wasn't broken. He "might have a ruptured bicep" but he said he had otherwise "got away lightly".Extraordinary incident and incredible that everyone - spectators included - walked away with minor injuries. Never seen a crash like that in 10yrs of covering track cycling. Gee said, like Laura Kenny did yesterday, that it was maybe time to introduce some sort of plexi-glass to protect fans in front rows of velodromes in future. Incidents of riders flying into the crowd are very rare but next time they might not be so lucky

For a minute it looks like the Canadian has it but disaster as he drops the bar behind him. You're not allowed to do that and Chris Murray has a gold medal!

A games record as well for the English weightlifter.

11:48 AM

Appeal unsuccessful

The appeal is rejected! Only Nicholas Vachon can stop Bruce now.

11:47 AM

Controversy in the weightlifting

Australia's Kyle Bruce is trying to lift one kilo heavier than Chris Murray. He looks to bend his arm trying to lift the weight above his head and the jury request a replay to check. They rule it was bent! Murray still in top spot.

But hang on, Bruce's team are appealing...

As all that drama in the pool was unfolding, Wales lost their clash with Australia for the women's team table tennis bronze medal. 11:08 AM

Peaty: "Something's gone missing these past two-years"

People don't appreciate it (how difficult it is) and rightly so why would you? I don't appreciate any other job I guess. It's incredibly difficult to go five years in an Olympic cycle with the pressure of being an Olympic Champion and world record holder and having a baby and moving house. Doing all these things and it's not normal things, it's not normal for the brain to be going 24/7, because that's what it is and more.

I just go out there and do all I can do every single day and just train as hard as I can but something's gone missing these past two years. I just haven't felt the spark in it and I think sometimes you can get burnt out from the sport that you do love and it's like okay how do we find our spark again for the next two-years into Paris? Then if we go beyond that we do but if we don't we don't. Happy days

Fascinating interview

11:07 AM

Peaty speaking to the media

This morning I didn't even do a warm-up. I wasn't even that bothered so.... I had two hours sleep, obviously it was a devastating night for me. So I came here this morning just to get out there and hopefully get through the rounds. It takes time to reflect. It takes time to heal firstly and yeah, push on.

You've really got to go back to the drawing board and go back to basics. It's got very complicated the last two years but I know what I need to do now.

Adam Peaty steps out to a massive roar from the crowd - he's the one they all want to see. The swimmers step up to the starting blocks and wait for the beep. Just one length of the pool and they look so close. Michael Houlie in the lane next to Peaty is pushing him all the way. They stretch for the sensor and it's a dead-heat! Both Peaty and Houlie finish with a time of 27.100.

They both reach the final but Peaty's still far from his best. He would've expected to win that.

A good win in the end. The crowd count down the seconds to the foghorn being sounded and the Welsh players look relieved to have closed it out. Welsh captain Beth Bingham, who claimed her 100th cap today, made it 4-0 in the closing stages of the fourth quarter. A tough match but Wales get the three points thanks to the three goals they scored in seven minutes. They needed that to have any chance at qualifying for the knockout stages.

Scotland are up against Kenya on the astro next.

But we'll have to wait and see.

They're currently in a bit of trouble at 11-2 down, it would take something special from here to make the final.

Track cycling at the velodrome was abandoned at the end of the morning session after eight riders were caught up in a horrific crash.
