Coronation Street star Anne Reid spent six hours in A&E with broken arm

Coronation Street star Anne Reid has said she spent six hours in A&E with a broken arm before receiving treatment.

The actor, who played Valerie Barlow between 1961 and 1971, was admitted to University College of London hospital last Thursday.

She revealed the incident to her followers on Twitter, writing: "Last Thursday night I spent six hours in A&E at @NHSEnglandLDN #UCLH with a broken arm."

Reid also praised the work of the doctors and nurses who tended to her: "The nurses and doctors were absolutely brilliant so kind and caring I can't thank them enough."

A number of fans wished the actor well on social media with one writing: "So sorry to hear about your arm Anne but yes thank goodness for the #nhs We must support all those fighting to protect it."

Bonnie Langford also commented under Reid's post, writing: "Wishing you better soon, Annie."

Since nearly 19 million people watched her death in Coronation Street, Reid has been twice nominated for a BAFTA.

Her first nomination came in 2004 for her leading role in the film The Mother which was written by Hanif Kurieshi and also starred Daniel Craig and Steven Mackintosh.

Reid was then nominated again in 2013 for Best Actress in a TV show for her performance in Last Tango in Halifax but lost out to Sheridan Smith.

Earlier this year, Reid was confirmed to star in The Sixth Commandment for the BBC. Starring alongside Timothy Spall and Sheila Hancock, the show is a true crime drama that will explore the deaths of Peter Farquhar and Ann Moore-Martin.

The Sixth Commandment is written by Sarah Phelps who is best known for her BBC adaptations of various Agatha Christie novels including And Then There Were None.
