Coronation Street is preparing a new twist in the coercive control storyline involving Geoff and Yasmeen Metcalfe, as Paula Wilcox joins the cast.

The Sun reports that Wilcox will be making guest appearances as Geoff's former partner Elaine, whose arrival may offer fresh hope for Yasmeen. The part has been described as "pivotal".

It's not the first time that Wilcox – who recently featured in Trying and Grantchester – has appeared in Weatherfield. Back in 1969, she played a different character, Janine Langton.

She also played Laurel Thomas' mother Hilary Potts in 2007 and 2008.

At present, Yasmeen is awaiting trail for attempted murder after being pushed to breaking point by the evil Geoff. She pleaded not guilty in court.

The ITV soap has been hinting that Geoff's true colours will be exposed. Sally believes that Geoff is an abuser, with Eileen Grimshaw also having suspicions. And although Tim struggles to see his father's dark side, this week's episodes will see him witnessing Geoff turning nasty against Sally during a row.

Spoilers next week reveal that Geoff will surprisingly go to the police station and request that all charges against Yasmeen are dropped. Alya Nazir believes Geoff has an ulterior motive behind his move.

Coronation Street currently airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV.
