Coronation Street's Emily Bishop will briefly return, more than three years after Eileen Derbyshire left on a hiatus.

Show legend Derbyshire first played the character back in 1961, and made her temporary exit in January 2016 as Emily flew to Peru to reunite with her nephew Spider and do charity work there.

Now, the ITV soap has announced on Twitter that Emily will be back for a cameo appearance in October.

The show is currently filming Ken Barlow's (William Roache) 80th birthday party, and Emily will surprise him with a special video message.

Back in April, producer Iain MacLeod offered an update on a possible return for Derbyshire.

"We're in talks fairly regularly with Eileen," he said. "At the moment there's no plans for her to return, but... the door's certainly not closed there."

Earlier this year, Coronation Street moved a new family at number 3, as Norris sold the house to the Baileys.

"We just thought that given the circumstances we find ourselves in, it made sense to put a family in number three, but it's certainly not the end of Norris," MacLeod said earlier this year.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
