Coronation Street confirms more heartbreak for Yasmeen after Geoff's exit

From Digital Spy

Coronation Street's Yasmeen Metcalfe is no longer living in fear of her evil husband Geoff, after he fell to his death in December, but that doesn't mean that the story ends there.

There is a lot of trauma that Yasmeen (Shelley King) needs to heal from, and the soap's executive producer Iain MacLeod has now shared more about what's next for Yasmeen as she continues to face the impact of Geoff's abuse and manipulative behaviour.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media outlets as he teased the storylines coming up in 2021, MacLeod said that the soap was "very keen to reflect the real-world experiences that people like Yasmeen go through".

"Alya told her gran that it was over, but actually, it's not. The psychological impact of abusive relationships can last forever," MacLeod continued.

"There's also the practical side of what happened to Yasmeen. We know that Geoff was embezzling money from Yasmeen and taking out loans in her name, without her knowledge.

"A lot of that will come home to roost for Yasmeen, in a way that threatens to destabilise her recovery from what she's been through."

MacLeod also added that there will be "a ray of light" in Yasmeen's story too as Elaine Jones (Paula Wilcox) will play a "pivotal role in Yasmeen's recovery".

"The Elaine story will be a bit of a ray of light for Yasmeen," he shared. "Paula Wilcox is absolutely fantastic. Elaine played a pivotal role in the trial and she will also play a pivotal role in Yasmeen's recovery.

"They'll have an 'odd couple' friendship, and thankfully for Yasmeen it will be quite humorous in places. They're survivors of Geoff and trying to find their way as a double act," he added.

"So there'll be some light stuff for Yasmeen to play, but overall it's going to be a heartbreaking next chapter for her."

MacLeod has revealed a load more plot points about Corrie stories, and there's set to be a lot of heartbreak and tragedy in store for characters like Nina Lucas and Peter Barlow, while the Bailey family will be gaining a new member who will bring both humour and chaos to the cobbles too.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
