Coronation Street star Sally Ann Matthews has shared that she's started volunteering at a vaccination centre as the rollout continues across UK.

The actor, who plays Jenny Connor on the ITV soap, revealed via an Instagram post on Tuesday that she'd completed her first shift.

"First volunteer shift at a vaccination centre. Great to see so many people coming in for their booster x," she said alongside a photo of herself wearing a hi-vis volunteer vest and facemask.

Matthews, 51, received support from some of her fellow Corrie cast including Sally Metcalfe actor Sally Dynevor who commented: "Fabulous."

Meanwhile, Sally Carman, who plays Abi Franklin dubbed her a "ledge[nd]".

Another star of the cobbles helping out with the vaccine efforts is Julie Hesmondhalgh who played Hayley Cropper on the programme from 1998 until 2014 when the character was killed off.

On Wednesday, the 51-year-old shared a picture of herself at a vaccination centre in Tameside, Greater Manchester, telling her Twitter followers: "I'm vaccine runner today."

Hesmondhalgh went on to encourage people in the local area to turn up for a jab if they were eligible.

The government has committed to offering everyone a booster dose of the vaccine before the end of the year, having brought forward the goal of offering one before the end of January 2022.

Hordes of volunteers as well as 500 military personnel have been deployed to help speed up the programme.

At the weekend, it was reported that a record number of booster jabs had been administered with 830,403 being given on Saturday 18 December.
