Coronation Street's Sair Khan says Alya "won't rest" until Yasmeen is cleared

Coronation Street's Sair Khan has reassured viewers that her character "won't rest" until the truth about her grandmother Yasmeen's former partner Geoff has been exposed.

Sair, who plays Alya Nazir on the long-running ITV soap, appeared on This Morning today (Tuesday, July 28) to talk about the slow-burn storyline's latest development – Geoff's ex Elaine (Paula Wilcox) turning up – and whether it'll help clear Yasmeen's name.

"It looks like it's going to change everything but like you say, with coercive control, it's really hard to find against someone who's so insistent on peddling their lies and their version of the truth," she told presenters Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes.

"Alya's a dog with a bone, though, and she won't rest until the truth is out."

Elsewhere during the chat, Sair touched on Alya's "hero complex", and how speaking to Women's Aid made her realise that her character's early behaviour may not have helped Yasmeen (Shelley King) in the long run.

"There's been examples of her rushing in there... thinking that she knows what's best for her gran and she can just pack a bag and get her out of there," she explained.

"However, that can be really damaging for someone who's stuck in a relationship like that."

Later, she praised Ian Bartholomew, who plays Geoff, insisting that he's "so lovely in real life" despite playing such a despicable character on screen.

"We were having a laugh on set just yesterday, I just constantly praise him actually because I think he's doing such an wonderful job with this storyline and he's doing a lot to highlight the issue behind-the-scenes," she said. "He's brilliant, I have to admit."

Coronation Street currently airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV. This Morning airs weekdays from 10am.

Organisations including Women's Aid can provide further support and information on coercive control or coercive behaviour.
