Coronation Street acknowledged the passing of legendary cast member Liz Dawn during Wednesday's (September 27) double bill.

As announced earlier today, the ITV soap dedicated its first episode to the memory of the Vera Duckworth actress and also released a memorial video highlighting her greatest moments.

The 7.30pm airing of Corrie opened with a poignant continuity announcement: "Tonight's first episode of Coronation Street is dedicated to Liz Dawn, who sadly passed away earlier this week."

A spokesperson for Coronation Street confirmed on Tuesday (September 26) that the 77-year-old actress had died following a long battle with the lung condition emphysema.

Dawn made her first appearance on the cobbles in 1974, and would later become a regular through the late '70s. As her character took on more prominence, Bill Tarmey was introduced as Vera's hubby Jack.

Together, the Duckworths would become one of soap's classic double acts - memorably taking control of the Rovers Return Inn only to lose the pub to Alec Gilroy (Roy Barraclough) when financial trouble struck.

Dawn departed Corrie in 2008 when Vera tragically died from heart failure in her sleep in a moving episode. She'd later briefly return for a one-off when co-star Bill Tarmey left the ITV soap in 2010.

Announcing Dawn's passing on Tuesday, Coronation Street paid tribute in a press statement: "We are devastated and heartbroken at the passing of our much-loved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother, the incredible Liz Dawn.

"Liz died peacefully last night at home with her loving family around her. She has been the love, light and inspiration in our lives and we are bereft at her passing."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
