The will-they-won't-they nature of Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Melissa May's (Ming-Na Wen) relationship over the seasons of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD has been a big talking point among fans.

In the last season, things seemed to be getting deeper between the pair on a romantic level, and got very complicated given the fact that May was being impersonated by a decoy. Talk about awkward.

Plus, there are still secrets being hidden by Coulson, and inevitably the showrunners have now been pressed on where their relationship could go in season five.

"Right now, their plate is pretty full with just not dying, but we as writers have not forgotten that promise to the audience," Jeffrey Bell told TV Guide. "At some point we will return to that."

Jed Whedon added: "I think that they're back to square one, if at square one both of them have knowledge that they secretly have feelings for each other.

"So they have a strong friendship that they're sort of falling back on, but both with the deeper knowledge of how strong their connection is."

Meanwhile, Clark recently opened up about how the show itself has transformed since its inception, admitting that it has changed a lot.

"I think if we were still basically doing the same thing as we were doing in our first 10 episodes, we'd probably be a little bored by now," he said.

"I just stand in awe of the way our writers and our producers just, even after our most successful season by most accounts, in season four, just tear the whole thing apart and just take us to an entirely new universe.

"It reminds me of comics – when one rolls over, it's a whole new ball game and it's really thrilling."

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD has its two-hour season premiere on Friday, December 1 at 8pm ET on ABC in the US. Channel 4 airs the show in the UK.
