COVID-19: Almost 10 million Britons have had both coronavirus vaccine doses

More than 9.9 million people in the UK have now received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, while nearly 33 million have had their first dose.

According to government figures released on Sunday, 9,930,846 people have received both doses and 32,849,223 have had their first one.

The stats also showed 1,882 coronavirus cases were recorded in the latest 24-hour period.

Between 12 April and 18 April, 17,887 people had a confirmed positive test result - a decrease of -2.8% compared with the previous seven days.

A further 10 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for COVID-19 as of Sunday, bringing the UK total to 127,270.

Lockdown has worked in tandem with the vaccine rollout to drive down infections, hospitalisations and deaths.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock tweeted his thanks to the teams who continue to help with the vaccination programme.

NHS England data shows a total of 4,403,535 jabs were given to people in London between December 8 and April 17, including 3,388,656 first doses and 1,014,879 second doses.

This compares with 5,353,577 first doses and 1,479,358 second doses given to people in the Midlands, a total of 6,832,935.

The breakdown for the other regions is:

• East of England: 3,286,599 first doses and 1,029,411 second doses, making 4,316,010 in total

• North East and Yorkshire: 4,364,021 first and 1,381,687 second doses (5,745,708)

• North West: 3,505,580 first and 1,132,436 second doses (4,638,016)

• South East: 4,482,586 first and 1,325,347 second doses (5,807,933)

• South West: 3,026,690 first and 930,046 second doses (3,956,736)

The downward trajectory has prompted hospitality industry leaders to step up its calls on the government to commit to a reopening of indoor hospitality in England on 17 May and not let plans be "derailed" by talks of vaccine passports.

Chief executives from big chains including JD Wetherspoon, Young's, Greene King and Pizza Hut have signed a letter to the prime minister calling for the roadmap out of lockdown to go ahead as planned and for coronavirus restrictions to be fully lifted from 21 June.

Last week pubs and restaurants reopened in England for outdoor hospitality, but the 38 signatories warned around two-thirds were not able to do so and "none is breaking even".
