Cruel Summer spoilers follow.

Cruel Summer star Olivia Holt has opened up about the huge twist in the drama thriller's latest episode.

The new Freeform series has delivered plenty of unexpected turns since its debut as it delves deeper into the disappearance of the actress' character Kate Wallis.

In Tuesday's (June 8) episode, titled 'A Secret of My Own', we learn that Kate actually went willingly to her captor Martin Harris' (Blake Lee) house originally, entering into an inappropriate relationship with the vice principal.

However, as she grows increasingly homesick, Kate declares that she wants to leave, Martin telling her that her suitcase is in the basement before trapping her there.

Opening up about the new scenes to TVLine, Olivia explained that there was pressure to get everything right, especially given the sensitive nature of the subject matter.

"There was a lot of pressure to execute in a really honest and real way," she said.

"There was a lot of communication between Blake and me and the creatives to just make sure that we're telling this story honestly, because it's so often that we see in television and film an older person and a younger person being romanticized, but we didn't want to glamorize this, because it's not OK.

"And yeah, there was definitely some pressure, but we first needed to educate ourselves a little bit more on the concepts of grooming and gaslighting and manipulation and make sure that we were really telling the story truthfully."

Speaking further about Kate "unintentionally" being kidnapped by Martin before he locks her in the basement, Olivia added: "There was a fear, obviously, of her leaving the house because he didn't want anybody to know.

"I don't think that he ever intentionally planned to lock her in the basement. But he knew what he was doing was wrong. I mean, he had curtains up in the house. The whole episode, he is finding new ways to keep her in the house and to make sure that nobody knows that she's in there."
