One imagines it is not a phrase often associated with a man known for making millions of women go weak at the knees.

But Daniel Craig has admitted he could hear his grandmother telling him he looked like “mutton dressed as lamb” while he was filming his racy advert for Belvedere Vodka.

The actor, 54, dances around Paris in a tight-fitting vest top and thrusting his hips in the video for the drink released last month.

In the clip the James Bond star also shows off his tattooed, muscular arms and flashes a silver tooth accessory bearing his initials.

The father-of-two, who is married to Rachel Weisz, said he was reminded of his grandmother when he shot the advert, which was directed by Taika Waititi.

He told the Sunday Times Culture magazine: “When I did it, I thought of my nana. She was the voice in my head, saying, ‘Mutton dressed as lamb’."

At the end of the advert, Mr Craig takes a sip of vodka on ice and says "finally" to the camera, which has been interpreted as a nod to his freedom after him leaving the Bond franchise.

He said: “When I read the script, I thought, ‘Hmm, really'? Then I thought, ‘Let’s go with it. I hope people get the gag'.”

He added: “There was no meeting with my agents, [where they said] ‘OK. What are we going to do? An advert. You’re going to dance’. I wish life worked like that, but it doesn’t.”

Mr Craig also recalls how producer Barbara Broccoli agreed he could kill off Bond after the premiere of Casino Royale in 2006 if he agreed to do four other films.

After No Time to Die, the actor’s fifth film, he claims he said: “This is it. I don’t want to do any more. If we kill Bond, we can begin again.”
