After three seasons, Bruce Wayne embraces his destiny as The Batman in Gotham's fourth season trailer.

During the Fox show's Comic-Con International panel on Saturday (July 22), fans were treated to a sneak preview of the dark times ahead for Gotham City in the upcoming episodes.

While Gotham City was able to pull itself back from the brink of utter chaos caused by Alice Tetch's rage-inducing virus, the underworld remains on the brink of civil war.

Enter Jonathan Crane (aka the Scarecrow), whose experiments with fear toxin offer a brand new threat to the psyche of criminals and ordinary citizens alike in Gotham City.

Don't blame us, but we have bad news for those Penguin and Riddler shippers: they're definitely not getting back together. In fact, relations between the two are chillier than ever.

Lurking in the shadows as all of this chaos unfolds is young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), who is in assassin training from the Court of Owls and Ra's al Ghul to turn himself into a vigilante fighting for justice.

"You can make a difference," Alfred tells his ward in the fourth season trailer. "There's a time for masks. And there's a time for Bruce Wayne."

However, The Demon's Head still looms large and has mapped out a brutal destiny for Gotham City - as actor Alexander Siddig recently teased.

"I want [Ra's] to be mysterious," said Siddig. "I want him to be ambiguous. I want him to be incredibly cruel at times, and kind and paternal at other times.

"I think I'd like to offer myself as a replacement father figure to Alfred. I can get Bruce to cross the line that he should never cross."
