Dean Stockwell: Tributes to Quantum Leap actor who has died age 85

Veteran actor Dean Stockwell, best known for his role in the TV series Quantum Leap, has died at the age of 85.

The US star died peacefully at his home on Sunday morning, a representative told TMZ.

Stockwell played Admiral Al Calavicci in the sci-fi show, which aired over five seasons from 1989 to 1993.

He had starred alongside Scott Bakula in all 97 episodes.

Born in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, in 1936, Stockwell enjoyed a long and successfully career spanning 70 years which saw him nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar for his role in the 1988 movie Married to the Mob.

Other awards included two Golden Globes, one for Quantum Leap and another for his part as a child actor in the 1947 film Gentleman’s Agreement, in which he starred alongside Gregory Peck.

Stockwell appeared in other iconic films including Dune (1984), Paris, Texas (1984) and Blue Velvet (1986).

News of his death has sparked a wave of tributes on social media.

Filmmaker and journalist Bilge Ebiri tweeted: “RIP Dean Stockwell, a great actor who never met a scene he couldn’t steal.”

Director Mark Huestis described Stockwell as a “great, underrated” American actor.

In a Facebook tribute, he said: “Throughout he demonstrated both his versatility and enormous sensitivity, vulnerability, and depth as an actor. I loved him. He will be missed.”

Another fan tweeted: “I think Dean Stockwell was probably the first actor I ever loved, he was just so goddamned suave on Quantum Leap.

“Then you get older and see him pop up all over and realize he was actually one of the greatest character actors of all time. What a legacy! RIP.”

Teresa Pearce, the former Erith and Thamesmead MP, wrote: ‘Sad. I loved Quantum Leap. RIP Dean.’
