Yahoo News Dexter star finally explains how their character can return in revival

Dexter's forthcoming revival series is resurrecting another character.
After previously confirming that John Lithgow will be reprising his role as the Trinity Killer, it has now been announced that Jennifer Carpenter will be back as Debra.
While Lithgow is coming back as a guest star, TV Line reports that Carpenter will be a series regular.
During the Dexter Q&A at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Carpenter confirmed she will be playing a 'new and imaginary' iteration of Debra after the character was killed off in the 2013 series finale.
"I don't think of her as a ghost [per se, but] more of a link or an echo or an inconvenient truth for Dexter," Carpenter explained. "[She] comes back to sort of haunt and punish and caretake and provoke and love [him]."
Michael C Hall, who plays Dexter, added: "As much as [Deb] is an internalised character for Dexter, I think [she] represents how far he's fallen… without a compass. I was so excited about Jennifer doing this because I knew she would be able to shape shift and come at Dexter from so many different places.
"And, of course, she did. And it was really fun to crack open our sense of [Dexter's] internal landscape, because it's much more pyrotechnic and crazy than it used to be."
Dexter: New Blood is set to premiere on November 7 on Showtime with the series consisting of 10 episodes.
The first trailer hit in July and shows that in the years since the finale, Dexter has made a brand new life for himself in the town of Iron Lake, going by the false name Jim Lindsay.
However, it won't be long before circumstances bring him back towards old habits.
Clyde Phillips will be back serving as showrunner and he previously insisted the new series won't be retconning anything from the poorly received finale.
"We're not undoing anything," he said. "We're not going to betray the audience and say, 'Whoops, that was all a dream.' What happened in the first eight years happened in the first eight years."
Dexter: New Blood hits Showtime on November 7.
