Iconic stand-up comedian and actor Don Rickles did not record any new material for Pixar's upcoming Toy Story 4, it has been confirmed.

The legendary sharp-tongued comic, who voiced Mr Potato Head in the Toy Story series, passed away earlier this week on April 6, after suffering from kidney failure.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rickles was set to reprise his role as the hilarious loudmouth Potato Head for the fourth movie, which is scheduled for a 2019 release.

And Don's representative has now confirmed that Rickles had not yet been called in to record his voice for Mr Potato Head's inevitable role in the film.

While the film's plot and Mr Potato Head's part in it are still unknowns, Pixar could now look at using previously recorded material from the earlier films to voice the part in Toy Story 4.

Toy Story director John Lasseter, who will be co-directing Toy Story 4 alongside Josh Cooley, was among those who paid tribute to the actor, calling him a "genius".

"[Don was] a comic genius, and here at Pixar we were honoured to also call him a friend," he said in a statement.

He also wrote: "The wit, personality, and incredible timing he brought to Mr Potato Head lit up the character and made him an essential part of the Toy Story ensemble.

"Even though Mr. Potato Head's facial features fell off in every Toy Story movie, his heart never left him - that was because of Don."

Rickles was considered by many to be one of the last-living icons of the early days of US comedy, and was frequently cited as an influence by the likes of David Letterman, Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld and Howard Stern.

Known for his quick wit and distinctive onslaught of tongue-in-cheek insults towards his audience, the comedian earned the ironic nickname of Mr Warmth from Tonight Show's Johnny Carson.

Tributes have since poured in for Rickles since his death, with everyone from Tom Hanks to Jim Carrey to James Corden remembering the comic's sharp wit and widespread influence.
