Yahoo News Dynasty brings glamour to The CW's autumn trailers
It seems impossible that The CW even has space in its autumn slate for new shows thanks to its overabundance of DC Comics superheroes, but the network has somehow found room.
The frenzy of the upfronts sadly came to a close on Thursday (May 18) with the release of sneak peeks at The CW's series pick-ups, including the revival of an '80s soap, a Pretty Little Liar in serious trouble and, of course, a new superhero:
Dynasty
Cast: Nathalie Kelley (The Vampire Diaries), Elizabeth Gillies (Victorious) and Grant Show (Melrose Place)
Premise: "[The series] will be told primarily through the perspectives of two women at odds: Fallon Carrington – daughter of billionaire Blake Carrington – and her soon-to-be stepmother, Cristal – a Hispanic woman marrying into this WASP family and America's most powerful class. In an age where dynasties appear everywhere – from reality TV to the polling booths – this epic drama features the one percent in all its glitz and gloss, while exposing the dark underbelly: a corrupt world built on backroom deals, betrayal, and, in some cases… murder."
Fun Fact: Who better to give Dynasty a 2017 twist than producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage - the team behind modern classics The O.C. and Gossip Girl?
Life Sentence
Cast: Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars)
Premise: When Hale's character is diagnosed with terminal cancer, she decides to throw out all of life's rules and live each day as if she's near the end. But what happens when she finds out she's not dying after all?
Fun Fact: Scrubs and Cougar Town creator Bill Lawrence returns to TV as Life Sentence's executive producer.
Valor
Cast: Matt Barr (One Tree Hill) and Christina Ochoa (Animal Kingdom)
Premise: The personal and professional conflicts within an elite group of US Army helicopter pilots rise to the surface after one of their most dangerous missions goes very, very wrong.
Fun Fact: The project is the fulfilment of CW president Mark Pedowitz's long-time goal of adding a military drama to the network.
Black Lightning
Cast: Cress Williams (Prison Break) and Christine Adams (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)
Premise: "Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a man wrestling with a secret. As the father of two daughters and principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe haven for young people in a New Orleans neighborhood overrun by gang violence, he is a hero to his community. Nine years ago, Pierce was a hero of a different sort. Gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning.
"However, after too many nights with his life on the line, and seeing the effects of the damage and loss that his alter ego was inflicting on his family, he left his Super Hero days behind and settled into being a principal and a dad. Choosing to help his city without using his superpowers, he watched his daughters Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) grow into strong young women, even though his marriage to their mother, Lynn (Christine Adams), suffered. Almost a decade later, Pierce's crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought.
"But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, and those he cares about in the crosshairs of the menacing local gang The One Hundred, Black Lightning returns - to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community."
Fun Fact: Although Black Lightning is based on a DC Comics character and produced by ArrowVerse king Greg Berlanti, it will not be a part of the DC TV Universe because it's filmed in Atlanta rather than Arrow's home in Vancouver.
