EastEnders star Max Bowden has revealed he suffered a real injury filming the soap.

Bowden's character Ben Mitchell has been involved in some intensely physical scenes recently as he has carried out a vendetta against homophobia in Walford by attacking residents for making offensive comments.

Recent episodes have seen Ben involved in a scuffle with a homophobic man called Rich, leading to him accidentally attacking his own nephew Peter Beale in a case of mistaken identity.

Bowden has now shared a photo of his actual bruised hand, showing the results of a tough filming experience on EastEnders.

"Occupational hazard from Mondays episode… two shattered knuckles and one big bruise," he wrote alongside the photo. "Playing Ben Mitchell is a joy 😆 thanks for all the comments. Big couple of weeks incoming.! @bbceastenders."

The "big couple weeks" Bowden referred to is that he will be at the centre of an issue-based storyline that delves into male rape.

Soap bosses have worked with Survivors UK, Survivors Manchester and the Male Survivors Partnership for a gripping story that will explore the fallout of Ben being assaulted by barman Lewis Butler.

Bowden has said he is "honoured" to be given such an important story while co-star Tony Clay stressed that it's vital to "keep stories like this prevalent and on people's minds".

"I think it's something that, when done well, can be really hard-hitting and thought-provoking and get a conversation going," Clay told Digital Spy.

"Ultimately, that's our job. I think that's the job of all shows, really, and for us as actors, it's so important. That's what we sign up to do: to tell important stories."

EastEnders airs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
