EastEnders star Shona McGarty cried over emotional Whitney baby script

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders star Shona McGarty has confessed that she cried when she learned what would happen to Whitney on the soap.

Whitney will discover she's pregnant during the lead-up to her 30th birthday.

As a result, she is immediately thrown into a dilemma over whether to share the news with Zack, who is the father.

Opening up about the storyline, McGarty said that it touched her on a deeper level.

"When I read that script, I actually cried because it was so beautiful," she revealed.

"It really establishes their friendship and how strong they all are. When Whitney’s worrying about being a single mum, Chelsea, Finlay and Felix say, 'What are you talking about? You're not on your own. You've got us, and we're your family!'

"I absolutely love the dynamic between Felix and Finlay and Chelsea and Whitney. It's so much fun to film. Whitney is completely taken aback and overwhelmed by the kindness.

"I mean, you think someone cares about you, and then they really show you, and Whitney loves them with all her heart, and they absolutely adore Whitney. She feels safe when she's around them, so they're like her security," added the star.

She went on to share how Whitney feels turning 30, and how she used her own experiences to really get into character.

"Like I bloody did!" she laughed. "It's the scariest thing – it's terrifying. You start weighing up your life and seeing what you've got and what you have achieved, and it's the same for Whitney."

She added: "I could play that quite easily! Whitney kind of embraces it, but obviously, her life's been turned upside down, so she's not really having a very happy birthday."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
