The politician has thrown himself into training since he joined the BBC One ballroom show at the beginning of September and while he’s managed to strike up a friendship with his fellow contestants, he doesn’t get invited out after the shows.

He explained: “The difference is that the contestants my age then go home and go to bed, and the young celebrities go down to Camden or central London and I think go through to the morning. "Really sadly, they’ve not invited me. I don’t know what it is.

"I mean, there’s like this awkward moment about midnight and people sort of slip out and I sort of stand there and nobody really says goodbye because they all want to leave without people noticing. It’s really tragic.”

But one Strictly star Ed has got close to is judge Craig Revel Horwood, admitting he once shared a kiss with him.

The former Shadow Chancellor - who has been married to his wife Yvette Cooper since 1998 - accidentally locked lips with the at the Teach First Awards earlier this month and wouldn’t mind doing it again at some point because he found the whole experience rather “good”.

Speaking on BBC Radio 1’s Breakfast Show, he explained during a game of Snog, Marry and Avoid: “I would definitely snog Craig, because I have before and it was good. We were actually at a Teach First Awards and he kissed me. I’m not sure how it happened.”

The former MP went on to state he’d happily marry head judge Len Goodman - who is leaving the panel after the current series - because he’s so “wise” and would avoid extravagant Italian dancer Bruno Tonioli, although he doesn’t think he’d get very far.

He said: “Obviously I’d marry Len because he’s such a solid, dependable wise guy. I could go off clubbing with Daisy Lowe and come back in the morning and Len would be still asleep and say, ‘Have you made the tea?’ and then he wouldn’t even know you’d been out.

"But I can’t avoid Bruno! Even if you tried, he’d still be there.”
