Emmerdale addresses fan confusion over Rhona's mum

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale has aired a cheeky explanation for any fan confusion over the introduction of Rhona Goskirk's mum Mary.

Monday's episode featured the arrival of former Doctor Who and EastEnders star Louise Jameson as "no-nonsense" Mary just in time to interrupt Rhona's marriage proposal to Marlon.

One big question viewers may have had going into Mary's first appearance is why they haven't actually seen her before? After all, Rhona has been a fan favourite on the ITV soap on and off since 2001.

Soap bosses attempted to head off any questions in Monday's instalment by having Rhona explain that Mary had never visited the village before for one very specific reason.

It turns out that Mary isn't a big fan of travel, so she prefers to have Rhona visit her rather than vice versa.

Rhona even quipped: "You always said you hated the countryside."

With that bit of backstory out of the way, Louise Jameson has promised the more tragic history of Mary's recent isolation is coming as well.

"There was a beautifully written scene where [Mary] admits to having been incredibly lonely, a very, very close friend of hers died and she didn't even get, like a lot of people through the country, didn't even get a chance to say goodbye," Louise Jameson has said.

"She just knew she was coughing. She saw the ambulance and then she never saw her again. And it left her feeling… well, she describes loneliness as being dark and soul-destroying, which I think a lot of people can probably identify with over the last couple of years.

"And she wants to change that, she wants to bring about a big change in her life where she never feels that loneliness again."

This new storyline will also examine how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected Mary's priorities.

"[Mary] wasn't there for the drug addiction or for the marriages [for Rhona]," Louise noted. "So she's been very absent. But COVID for her, because it's quite a contemporary character, COVID for her, has shone a light on her own loneliness and the importance of family, and she's really trying hard to make amends for being such a crap parent."

The actress already has her fingers crossed that viewers will be seeing lots of Mary because she would "love to stay" for a lengthy stint in Emmerdale.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV.
