He's been in Emmerdale for more than 30 years, but Chris Chittell would have no hesitation about leaving if Eric Pollard stopped getting decent storylines.

The actor – who is married to his co-star Leslie Dunlop – first stepped foot in the Dales in 1986, making him the show's longest-running character.

Chris admitted that Eric's gripping plots have kept him in the soap all this time, adding that he'd consider packing his bags if the stories stopped coming.

"I can see Pollard heading downhill in five or 10 years' time," he said to Inside Soap. "But you're only ever as good as your last storyline.

"I've always said that when the writers stop writing for Pollard, I'd leave. And although I'd hate it, I'd just shake everyone's hand and say thank you very much, as the journey has been wonderful.

"But when it does happen, I'll just have to get the fishing rod out."

Sharing his thoughts on Emmerdale's success, Chris said: "We've always had a good cast, always. We churn out stories, and it's a great team effort.

"It's wonderful to go on set the day after winning an award and see everyone congratulating each other. That's tremendous – but we know and have always known that Emmerdale produces good stuff. The words and performances are always there."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
