Emmerdale star Amy Walsh has admitted that she was shocked when she first read the script for Vanessa Woodfield's outburst against Tracy Metcalfe.

The sisters had an emotional argument in Friday night's episode (August 2), as Vanessa bitterly blamed Tracy for the tragic demise of their father Frank.

Frank died a hero this week when he rescued Tracy from the burning factory. The aftermath has seen Vanessa left furious, as Tracy was only trapped in the building because she was waiting there to have sex with her love interest Billy Fletcher.

Discussing the big row, Amy explained: "I've really enjoyed how they have written Vanessa and Tracy. I think it's so true to life how people, even as close as sisters, deal with grief in different ways.

"You see Vanessa being stoic, strong and hard, when she's usually the softie. But she gets a real strength and is actually quite horrible to Tracy.

"When I first read it, I was like: 'As if she'd be like that to her poor little sister who is crying!' But she's in pain and is dealing with it too. I think it's much more interesting to see how that plays out, than just have them crying and sad."

Amy admitted that the Emmerdale cast were disappointed to lose Michael Praed, who played the role of Frank for three years.

She said: "We were so sad to see him go. It's weird because we saw him lying 'dead' on the ground, which is quite a harrowing thing to witness even though it's fake.

"Michael's send-off from the show was absolutely lovely. He wanted just a small affair with a few drinks, but we were like: 'No absolutely not!' The whole building and everyone in it were absolutely gutted to see him leave and we all feel like it's a big tragedy and a great loss.

"The storyline is amazing for the show. It's great to have a good exit if you do have to go, but at the same time he loved it here and we loved him.

"He's been like a second dad to me. He'll take me to the garage and pump up my tyres for me and bring me chicken soup when I'm ill. He's a wonderful human so we had to give him justice and did a video montage for him with everyone saying bye. It was just a nice group having a great time with a few drinks.

"Tracy's guilt has also kind of mirrored real life, as I've felt a bit responsible for Michael having to leave – even though I know it's not my responsibility or my fault!

"So it's been a bit of a weird one for me in that respect, because everyone's so sad to see him go. But that's how the soap world is and you have to be prepared for it. You've just got to enjoy it while you can and while you're here."

Amy is now hoping that Emmerdale will delve deeper into Tracy and Vanessa's backstory in the future.

"You might think that they have a strange relationship with both of their mothers but there is room for that," she explained.

"It would be nice to touch on that, which is why I think it's a bit of a shame that Frank has gone, because they could have done that while he was here, but we'll see what they'll do.

"You never know what they have up their sleeve! There's our mothers, and then you never know, there might be another long lost brother or sister! They do just turn up!"

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with extra episodes at 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
