Emmerdale's Mark Charnock gets emotional as he wins NTA award

The National Television Awards tonight saw Emmerdale's Mark Charnock scoop the award for Serial Drama Performance following his portrayal of Marlon Dingle's recovery from a stroke.

The actor was up against EastEnders' Gillian Wright and Rose Ayling-Ellis, and Emmerdale co-star Paige Sandhu.

Looking in shock as Love Island's Gemma Owen and her footballer dad Micheal announced his name, he took to the stage.

Praising the fellow nominees, he said: "I just want to say it felt like I was in the Top 4 because of the amazing actresses I was nominated with whose work is just off the scale. Extraordinary work that I admire so much.

"I just want to thank everyone at Emmerdale really, when you embark on a story like this, you've got to do it properly.

"We're in a unique position in soap where we can do it incrementally, day after day, you can mark little changes so we're really lucky in that respect. Our production team really embraced that.

"Every script has been like a heartbreaking gift," he said before going on to thank those who had worked behind the scenes. "The Stroke Association who have just been so supportive and amazing all the way through. Some of the survivors who have shared their heartbreaking stories, it's just been an important journey we've been on, raising awareness.

"I just want to thank the public, I didn't think I had a chance of winning this. This sub-culture that has developed underneath with people sharing their stories with each other because it's so common, and it's so underfunded the research. You've overwhelmed me and I'm going to take this away and stare at it, thank you so much!"

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
