Emmerdale has confirmed that Maya Stepney isn't re-joining the soap's cast following her shock return last night – at least for now.

Viewers were stunned as Maya made an unexpected appearance in the closing scene of Tuesday's hour-long episode (November 19), which revealed that she is pregnant.

Maya, played by Louisa Clein, has been released from prison early for good behaviour. She seemingly has no immediate plans to make contact with Jacob Gallagher, as she was seen deleting his number from her phone last night.

Digital Spy reached out to Emmerdale for clarification on Maya's future and a spokesperson told us: "Louisa filmed that scene earlier this year whilst she was still with us.

"There continue to be no current plans for the character of Maya to return."

Emmerdale's producer Kate Brooks had also previously ruled out a return for Maya in the near future.

Speaking to Inside Soap in October, Brooks explained: "Maya was so multilayered that it feels as though we only just scratched the surface with her. Louisa is a tremendous actress, but there are no plans as yet."

Of course, the big revelation of Maya's pregnancy is one of those ticking soap timebombs which could explode in the future, making it possible that we could see her again further on down the line when the time is right.

Maya, who'd groomed Jacob, was sentenced to 12 months behind bars earlier this year after pleading guilty to sending inappropriate texts to the schoolboy when he was 15. She avoided more serious charges as Jacob refused to give any evidence against her.

In the immediate future, upcoming Emmerdale scenes will see Jacob renew his efforts to move on from Maya by pursuing his relationship with Leanna Cavanagh.

Next week, he also agrees to see a counsellor – a decision that is supported by his stepfather David.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
