Nothing says the impending arrival of spring like a timely political thriller, so here's our first-look at Channel 4's brand new drama set to launch in the coming months.

A four-part adaptation of Lucy Kirkwood's Olivier Award-winning play of the same name, Chimerica is the channel's latest series to tackle some of the most urgent issues affecting society today. Political unrest included, of course.

The drama, which tells the fictional story of a photojournalist struggling to vindicate his most celebrated work, stars the likes of American Hustle's Alessandro Nivola, Cherry Jones (24; The Handmaid's Tale), F Murray Abraham (Homeland), Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda), and Terry Chen (Jessica Jones).

Alessandro Nivola takes the lead as Lee Berger, a photojournalist who has lost his way after working in war-torn countries and is struggling to live up to his early success found in China.

After his most famous work – an image of a young man standing up to military in Tiananmen Square – is accused of being forged, Lee sets out on a journey to find the man he captured all those years before.

Updating the play's original backdrop of the 2016 US Presidential election, Channel 4's Chimerica will reflect the political upheaval experienced in the last two years, promising to ask questions about 'fake news', political protest, and ever-changing global relationships.

A light and breezy watch, then.

Directed by Line of Duty and Strike's Michael Keillor, Chimerica is expected to air on Channel 4 in the spring.
