Michael Redfern, the face of the iconic Oxo ads, has died aged 79.

The actor, famed for appearing in the gravy promotions alongside his on-screen wife wife Lynda Bellingham, died at his home in Spain following an illness, his family confirmed.

Michael’s advert aired for 16 years between 1983 and 1999 and Michael became dubbed the ‘Oxo dad’ and Lynda the 'Oxo mum'.

Lynda went on to appear as a panellist on ITV’s ‘Loose Woman’ before dying of colorectal cancer aged 66.

Michael’s son Ashley paid tribute to his dad, who died last Friday. (29.07.22)

He told the Miror after news of his passing emerged on Friday night (05.08.22): "Over the years, he was cast in a variety of roles including leading parts in the soap opera ‘United! The Newcomers’ as well as roles in classics such as ‘The Two Ronnies’, ‘Porridge’ and ‘Some Mothers Do Av ‘Em’.

"He of course was best known for his role in the Oxo commercials, which he did for 17 years and became a much loved figure in one of Britain's favourite television families.

"He will be greatly missed by his wife Carol and his family."

Michael was born Isleworth, Middlesex, in 1943 and appeared in a string of TV dramas and comedies, with his other roles including parts in ‘The Young Detectives’, ‘Crossroads’, ‘The Offence’, ‘And Mother Makes Five’, ‘George and Mildred’ and ‘The Young Ones’.

He was also in one episode of ‘EastEnders’ and ‘Doctors’ and in his later years worked as a taxi driver before moving to Spain with wife Carol.
