Fantastic Beasts actress Alison Sudol has defended her character's dark new direction in sequel The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Sudol portrays tender-spirited Queenie Goldstein in the Harry Potter spin-off franchise, but throughout the new movie, her narrative route takes a surprising turn when she joins Gellert Grindelwald in the fight for a new world order.

Johnny Depp's wizard proves to be one persuasive chap indeed, convincing arguably the film's sweetest character to help his evil cause.

But now, chatting to Entertainment Weekly, Sudol has admitted that Queenie's decision is based on her own loneliness and feeling betrayed by her sister Tina.

"Jacob [Kowalski] doesn't come with her," she said. "It's not so much about Jacob not coming with her to the dark side, it's like, 'Jacob, walk with me, we're in this together'. And she doesn't have those two, so who does she have?

"Newt's kind of betrayed her – he called her out, it was embarrassing. What does she have?"

Sudol sympathises with Queenie's plight, believing that even the great Albus Dumbledore (played by Jude Law) couldn't resist the power of Grindelwald.

"I still believe in her heart of hearts she's going over to fight what she believes in," she said. "Grindelwald is saying, 'We're creating a different world' and the world that she is in is broken.

"I don't believe she's turning evil. It's more like she's trying to find somebody who is giving her an option. He's manipulating her but he's manipulating everybody. He even did that with Dumbledore."

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is out now.
