Disney+ true-crime thriller Under the Banner of Heaven has released a new image of Andrew Garfield's detective Jeb Pyre.

It's been a busy few months for the actor, having returned to the role of Peter Parker in December's multiverse spectacle Spider-Man: No Way Home before receiving an Oscar nod for Best Actor in February.

Now, in his first leading TV role, Garfield must investigate a murder possibly linked to the Mormon church.

Also starring Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People), Sam Worthington (Avatar 2), Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Denise Gough (Andor) and Succession favourite Kieran Culkin's younger brother Rory, the drama is based on real events chronicled in Jon Krakauer's 2003 book Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith.

Dustin Lance Black (Milk) wrote the screenplay, while David Mackenzie (Outlaw King), Thomas Schlamme (House of Cards) and Isabel Sandoval share directing credits.

The seven-episode show's synopsis reads: "A devout detective's faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder that seems to be connected to an esteemed Utah family's spiral into LDS fundamentalism and their distrust in the government."

Meanwhile, Edgar-Jones can currently be seen in "twisted must-see" movie Fresh, which is due to air on Disney+ later this month.

"It's a hard film to say [something about] because the joy of coming to it having no idea what's coming... I would say it's definitely not for the faint-hearted or the easily queasy," she recently told Graham Norton.

"I really hate horrors too. But I don't know if you find this... but I think sometimes, when you're making something that has elements of darkness, you really become way more hysterical."

Under the Banner of Heaven comes to Disney+ very soon.
