Five police officers and two squad cars swoop on man 'who didn't pay for Greggs sarnies'

Witnesses said five police officers in two squad cars swooped after reports of a man leaving Greggs without paying for his sandwiches. Stoke-on-Trent Live said the incident happened on Upper Market Square, in Hanley, at around 7.45am yesterday morning.

Officers raced to the scene and a man was arrested on suspicion of theft. He remained in custody last night.

A police spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a theft at a store, on Upper Market Square. A man left the shop without paying for sandwiches. We searched the area and stopped a man. A 35-year-old man, from Stoke-on-Trent, was arrested on suspicion of theft from a shop.”
