Five tracks to hear this week (Nov 17-23)

Sister album: Tove Lo
Sister album: Tove Lo

Eminem’s first album in four years is expected today, according to the internet, though there’s been little pre-release hype. He got plenty of attention anyway with the first single, surprise-released a few days ago, the introspective piano ballad Walk on Water featuring Beyoncé.

Having made a significant breakthrough with her superb 2014 album Are We There, New Jersey singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten is looking backwards before her next release. Her debut album from 2009, Because I Was in Love, has been remixed, remastered and renamed as (It Was) Because I Was in Love. It’s out today, including the fragile ballad Keep.

A year since Empire of the Sun’s third album, the Australian dance-pop duo are back with a new EP which includes a brand new song, On Our Way Home. There’s also a video for their song Way to Go, which as ever with these snappy dressers, is a feast for the eyes.

Swedish pop star Tove Lo isn’t hanging about following up her second album. Blue Lips, a “sister album” to last year’s Lady Wood, is out today. Once again she’s divided it into two “chapters”, this time titled Light Beam and Pitch Black.

New Australian singer-songwriter Stella Donnelly plays two London gigs next week, where she’s sure to get plenty of attention for her song Boys Will Be Boys. It’s a stark, timely ballad about sexual harrassment and victim blaming.
