Warning: this article contains major spoilers for the season five finale of The Flash.

The CW aired the final episode of The Flash season five yesterday (May 14), and there was one major casualty that fans must now deal with.

But first, back in the season premiere, a newspaper was introduced with the publication year of 2024 – the headline teased the Scarlet Speedster vanishing in a supposed 'crisis'.

Thanks to the latest episode, we know how this corresponds to the Arrowverse's upcoming crossover 'Crisis on Infinite Earths'.

In the episode, team Flash destroys Cicada's dagger in the present day, which unfortunately frees Reverse Flash (played by Tom Cavanagh) in the future, as the dagger was being used to nullify his powers during the wait for execution.

No longer imprisoned, Eobard Thawne battles Barry and Nora, but what fans of the original comics will realise is that the dagger's destruction has another unintended consequence – it creates a brand new timeline, erasing Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy) from existence and changing the newspaper date from 2024 back to 2019.

So it's now RIP to Nora (if she ever even lived in the first place), as Barry (Grant Gustin) and Iris (Candice Patton) watched their future daughter disappear in their arms.

Ultimately, the new episode teases Barry's disappearance in the 'crisis' aspect of the next Arrowverse crossover – which is due to broadcast later this year.

That's unless the show completely deviates from the original comics, anyway.

As Thawne says himself in the finale: "See you in our next crisis."

The Flash airs on The CW in the US, and Sky One and NOW TV in the UK.
