Poor unfortunate Caitlin Snow – not only was the Flash favourite transformed into super-villain Killer Frost, but now her latest love interest has gone and vanished.

Tom Felton – who played Julian Albert on the show last year – won't be returning for the upcoming fourth season, despite striking up a connection with Caitlin.

Speaking to Digital Spy about Julian's absence, actress Danielle Panabaker said: "Here's the one thing I will say about Caitlin's relationship with Julian last year – I think he was more into her than she was into him.

"She was dealing with so much personal stuff, so much turmoil, as she was learning about her powers. So I think it's a loss for the show and for Team Flash, but I don't know that Caitlin feels Julian's absence as deeply as she felt, for example, [her late fiancé] Ronnie's absence."

Ouch! Poor Julian. No wonder he ran back to London (we're guessing).

So, with Julian out of the picture, what's next for Caitlin? Last season, her evil alter ego Killer Frost was unleashed and sided with the sinister speedster Savitar – a dark and twisted version of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) from the future.

The good Caitlin ultimately regained control and fought with her friends against Savitar. But instead of taking a cure that would remove her Killer Frost powers, she decided to leave Team Flash and strike out on her own.

"She'd been through so much, and was so confused," Panabaker said. "I think the whole Savitar / Barry thing was very difficult for her, and I think she needed some time to step away from Team Flash, and sort of find herself, and find her own power again."

When we last caught up at Comic-Con, Danielle told us that "those who love Killer Frost won't be disappointed" by The Flash going forward... so has Caitlin really buried her darker urges for good?

"I like that our show gives us the opportunity to play all of the extremes – that I get to be bad, and I get to be sweet Caitlin," she said. "I also think it's interesting to find the imperfect elements in Caitlin, and the more human elements of Killer Frost – as an actor, it's a fun challenge to play against the stereotypes."

Whatever happens next, we can expect a lighter version of The Flash this coming season after season 3's high-drama and intense emotional takes.

"We're filming episode 5 [of season 4] right now and there's already a lot more levity to the show," Panabaker told us. "It's sort of getting back to our roots of season 1, where it was a little bit lighter and there really was so much heart. So I'm excited to get to explore that a little bit more."

The Flash: The Complete Third Season is out now on Blu-ray™ and DVD.
