The upcoming fifth season of The Flash will spend time "developing the relationship" between Caitlin Snow and Ralph Dibny – but their friendship on the show won't ever turn into a romance.

Ralph actor Hartley Sawyer revealed to Digital Spy and other media at San Diego Comic-Con that the idea of Caitlin and Ralph coupling up was mooted early on, but Caitlin actress Danielle Panabaker shot the idea down.

"People always thought it was going to be a romance, because every year Caitlin dates the new white guy on the show," Sawyer said.

Harsh, but fair. After her beloved Ronnie (Robbie Amell) was killed off – twice – Caitlin became romantically involved with season two's fake Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears) and season three's Julian Albert (Tom Felton).

So when Dibny arrived at STAR Labs, it's easy to see why some fans figured he'd be next. "Immediately all of us talked about that," Sawyer revealed. "And we're like 'No' – she [Panabaker] put the kibosh on it quicker than anybody. She was like, 'No, I'm not doing that'."

Sawyer agreed: "It would not have been a good choice. I think it's really cool that they're just friendly, and we're gonna develop that more. i think they care about each other, but in that platonic way."

Interestingly, Barry Allen actor Grant Gustin also revealed that, earlier in the show's run, producers had contemplated pairing his character with Caitlin for a time, only for Gustin to object and insist that Barry should be with his true love Iris (Candice Patton).

"I remember they entertained the idea of [other] love stories, like Barry and Caitlin, early on," Gustin said. "It was like, 'How soon do we want to do Barry and Iris?', but I always pushed [for it]. This is the love of his life, let's go for that, it's more interesting."

Bad luck, SnowBarry fans!

The Flash season 5 begins on Tuesday, October 9 at 8/7c on The CW.
