Award-winning actor Roy Dotrice, probably best known for his roles as Hallyne the Pyromancer in Game of Thrones and as Leopold Mozart in the Oscar-winning 1984 film Amadeus, has died at the age of 94.

The news was confirmed in a statement from his family (via BBC), which said that the actor "died peacefully on Monday October 16 in his London home surrounded by family, including his three daughters, grandchildren and great-grandson".

During a decades-long career as an actor, Dotrice won a Tony Award, a BAFTA and a Drama Desk Award, but was most prominent in recent years for his work on Game of Thrones.

As well as appearing in the hit HBO series' second season as Hallyne the Pyromancer for two episodes, Dotrice also narrated the audiobooks for George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series and holds the Guinness World Record for the most number of characters voiced by a single actor in an audiobook.

That record comes from his reading of the series' first novel, A Game of Thrones, in which he voices 224 characters in an audiobook that's 33 hours long.

He has also narrated many storybook adaptations for Disney Records, including The Little Mermaid, for which he got a Grammy award nomination.

Alongside Game of Thrones, Dotrice also made a name for himself starring as Charles Dickens in Dickens of London, as Albert Haddock in the BBC adaptation of AP Herbert's Misleading Cases, and as Father Gary Barrett in 1980s American series Beauty and the Beast.

He also appeared as Zeus in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys in 1998 and as Wesley Wyndam-Pryce's father Roger in Angel.

Before getting into performing, Roy served in the Royal Air Force during World War II as a wireless operator and air gunner, during which time his plane was shot down and he was held as a prisoner of war.

Roy was married to his wife Katherine Newman for 60 years before her death in 2007 and the couple had three daughters, one of whom (Karen Dotrice) is best known for her role as Jane Banks in Disney's Mary Poppins.
