Gentleman Jack fans, rejoice: star Suranne Jones has spoken about the possibility of a third season.

The acclaimed show stars Jones as the historical figure Anne Lister, the world’s “first modern lesbian” who wrote about her love life in heavily coded diaries.

Though the second series is currently airing on the BBC, there are currently no plans to make a third season, although we now know that Jones is keen.

“We don’t know! We’re just kind of like, it’s in the hands of BBC and HBO so I’m sure there’ll be talks now,” she told Metro on the red carpet at a recent Sky Up Next event.

‘I know all the fans really want it, Sally [Wainwright, the show’s creator and writer] really wants to write it,’ she said, adding that it was all down to the viewers.

“As with anything, has there been enough people watching it? Is there enough need for it? I think there is, but yeah… let’s see.”

The second series of Gentleman Jack have seen Jones as Lister continue to cause havoc in her conservative home town of Halifax.

In the first season, Lister wooed and subsequently married local heiress Ann Walker, played by Sophie Rundle (the couple take communion together to privately cement their union) and as the pair leave the country to travel around Europe, Walker soon discovers that Lister has not been fully forthcoming about her past.

To add to the drama, Lister’s former lover Marianna Lawton (Lydia Leonard), stuck at home with her dull and pompous husband Charles, is dismayed to find her place in Lister’s affections threatened by Walker, and can’t stop herself from writing to Anne to complain of her misery.

In addition to Gentleman Jack, Jones was confirmed as one of the stars for upcoming comedy drama special Christmas Carole at Sky Up Next.

Though little information has been given out about the show so far, it is intended to be a remake of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Written by Anil Gupta and Richard Pinto, it will also star some famous faces as the requisite ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. In the film’s synopsis, Sky describes it as "a yuletide story of our times, with apologies to Charles Dickens.”
