George Michael's family deny endorsing biopic about late Wham! star

It was reported that the star's family had endorsed a big budget biopic about his life and career

George Michael’s estate has poured cold water on a report claiming the star's family endorsed a big budget biopic about the late Wham! singer.

It had been reported that a film about Michael’s life and career was in the pipeline, with The White Lotus’ Theo James thought to be the frontrunner to play the Careless Whisper singer.

However, Michael’s camp has now said they didn’t endorse the biopic about the star, who died in 2016 at the age of 53.

They said in a statement on the official George Michael website that they didn't know anything about it and that there was "no truth whatsoever" in the story.

“To all of George’s Lovelies, fans and lovers of his music, a story has been published stating that George Michael’s family has endorsed a so called ‘biopic’ about his life," said the message.

“On behalf of George’s family and GME (George Michael Entertainment) we want to make it clear that there is no truth whatsoever in this story, we know nothing about this project and will not be endorsing it in any way.”

It was signed: “George Michael Entertainment.”

The original report has said that the singer's family endorsed the planned Michael biopic following the success of films about other huge artists, such as Queen star Freddie Mercury.

The biopic was said to be well into the development stages, with Divergent actor James the actor people wanted in the lead role.

Michael died on Christmas Day in 2016 and a coroner later determined his death was due to natural causes.
