Ghosts is officially returning for another haunting series, with the BBC confirming that the comedy show will be back for series 4.

Ghosts, which made its debut in 2019, follows married couple Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike Cooper (Kiell Smith-Bynoe), who inherit the impressive but crumbling Button House from a distant relative of Alison's. The couple decide to move into the house and turn it into a luxury hotel – but the plan hits a snag when the house's collection of ghosts from across the ages decide that they aren't so keen on the idea.

After Alison suffers a near-death experience, she begins to be able to see the ghosts and the house's residents are forced to come to a co-existing arrangement.

When we return to Button House for series four, the house – or at least, the gatehouse – is open for business. But will Alison and Mike be able to make a success of their new venture or will the interfering ghosts manage to scupper their plans once again?

The series, which comes from the creators of Yonderland and the original stars of Horrible Histories, also stars Lolly Adefope, Katy Wix, Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby and Martha Howe-Douglas.

Filming on the new six-part series is due to begin in January, with the new episodes set to air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

The show's creators have said of the renewal: "We are thrilled to be returning to Button House for a fourth series. We have an exciting batch of new stories in store and can't wait to share the next chapter."

Jon Petrie, Director of Comedy at the BBC, added: "We can't wait to return to Button House for series 4. Ghosts is a true jewel in BBC Comedy's crown, and we're delighted to be working again with the cast and creators, and Monumental (Television), who never fail to deliver a faultless combination of big laughs and loads of heart."

The official confirmation follows star Wix, who plays ghost Mary, previously revealing that Ghosts would be starting production again in January 2022.

While this means that we probably won't get to see the new run on our screens until later next year, fans can whet their appetite over the festive season with the Ghosts Christmas special.

This year's festive episode, which airs on December 23, will see Kitty (Adefope) become convinced that Santa has arrived early when Mike and Alison discover a man living in a tent on their house's grounds.

Ghosts seasons one, two and three are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
