Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Michael Nyqvist dies

Michael Nyqvist - the Swedish actor best known for starring in author Stieg Larsson's Millennium film series - has died at age 56.

A statement from his family on Tuesday (June 27) announced that the acclaimed star had passed away following a battle with lung cancer (via The Hollywood Reporter).

"Michael's joy and passion were infectious to those who knew and loved him," his family's statement read.

"His charm and charisma were undeniable, and his love for the arts was felt by all who had the pleasure of working with him."

Nyqvist famously played the investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the original Swedish-language Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opposite Noomi Rapace, and reprised the role throughout the Millennium series.

The role of Mikael Blomkvist was ultimately recast for the English-language remake, with James Bond star Daniel Craig stepping in for Nyqvist in director David Fincher's 2011 movie.

Nyqvist memorably appeared in John Wick opposite Keanu Reeves as the New York mob king Viggo Tarasov, and played the devious nuclear scientist Kurt Hendricks in 2011's Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

Other memorable film credits include the Taylor Lautner action vehicle Abduction, Emma Watson's romantic drama Colonia and the upcoming Gary Oldman and Gerard Butler political thriller Hunter Killer.
