Xena may live to fight another battle, but it won't be anytime soon.

NBC president Jennifer Salke has delivered the news that the network's plan to reboot Xena: Warrior Princess with a new lead actress has been shelved indefinitely, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Nothing is happening on that right now," she confirmed. "We looked at some material; we decided at that point that it didn't warrant the reboot."I'd never say never on that one because it's such a beloved title, but the current incarnation of it is dead."

That most recent incarnation of Xena: Warrior Princess came from Lost writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach, and would have explored a romantic dynamic between Xena and her sidekick Gabrielle.

Neither Lucy Lawless or her co-star Renee O'Connor were going to return for this reboot, but it was being executive produced by original series co-creators Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert.

As for the future of Xena, Jennifer Salke isn't completely against the idea of the project being retooled and developed again at some later stage. It seems.

"I need someone to come in with a point of view about what they want to do," the Peacock Network executive explained.

The original Xena: Warrior Princess was a spin-off of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, both of which set a standard for '90s syndicated TV along with Baywatch.

Judging by the lack of success of the new Baywatch, perhaps it's best to leave a classic like Xena: Warrior Princess on the shelf for a while?
