Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has been warned by doctors that her husband Derek Draper may never come out of his coma.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain today (January 26), presenter Piers Morgan spoke about the severity of Derek's situation as he urged viewers to continue to take the COVID-19 pandemic seriously.

Derek, who has been married to Kate since 2005, was taken to hospital last spring after contracting COVID-19 and he remains seriously ill in hospital.

Speaking about Kate and Derek's situation, Piers said: "We know from our colleague Kate Garraway, whose husband Derek is still in a coma from COVID. He may never come out of that coma. She's been told this, and it's heartbreaking.

"It has hit right here on our show... It's hit a lot of people now. 100,000 people or more have now lost their lives – think about how many family members they all have. Multiply that and you're getting into millions of people directly affected by COVID-19.

"We've got to take this seriously and we've got to get vaccinated as fast as possible. That's the only way through this."

Kate, who shares children Darcey and Billy with Derek, spoke about her feelings on Good Morning Britain last week, saying that she has been feeling "low" since Christmas.

"I've been a bit low since Christmas, physically low. I've felt like I'm slightly physically at the end of my tether. I've had to re-group a bit," she said.

Kate added that Derek is "still ravaged by the effects of COVID", saying that she is trying to stay hopeful and that she is constantly "talking to doctors about what we can do for him".

Kate recently announced that she is writing a new book called The Power of Hope about her and her family's experiences during Derek's fight against COVID-19, which is due for release in April.

"By telling the story of Derek's illness and how it has altered our lives, I hope to be able to reach out to others who are suffering," she said.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
