Grace Jones’ Meltdown festival: Your gig-by-gig guide to the 2022 series at Southbank Centre

After two years of waiting, Grace JonesMeltdown is finally coming to London.

The long-running festival series had initially invited Jones to curate the line-up for its 2020 edition, but her plans had to be put on ice not once but twice thanks to the pandemic.

Now, though, the famed Jamaican artist will finally follow in the footsteps of Yoko Ono, David Byrne, Patti Smith, Nile Rodgers and other past curators by overseeing a vibrant, multi-disciplinary programme.

Here’s everything you need to know.

When and where is it?

The festival will run for 10 days from June 10-19, taking place in and around the Southbank Centre — from the 900-capacity Queen Elizabeth Hall to the Riverside Terrace.

Who’s on the line-up?

The line-up is as intriguingly diverse as you’d expect from something put together by Jones — it covers bases from dub reggae to feminist pop, Afrobeat, post-punk, neo-soul and beyond.

Jones herself will appear twice (at least, officially — don’t be surprised if she pops up at any of the other shows), first at the festival’s curtain-raising event, and then on the final day with a headline set.

There are also a number of free events, from an opening party dedicated to music from across the Black diaspora, to a reggae soundclash, and a fashion extravaganza hosted in collaboration with Africa Fashion Week.

Here’s the full line-up:
