Bread week is a key moment in any Bake Off series: Paul Hollywood gets to sort the wheat from the chaff in his personal favourite themed episode.

This time was no exception, and even with a smaller group of contestants than expected, it gave viewers the chance to see who could be in with a chance of making the final.

Here are the biggest moments to rise to the top of bread week 2022.

Carole's big pants

She might have had a tough biscuit week, but this cookie wasn't planning on crumbling going into episode three.

Carole had come prepared - in her biggest, luckiest pants that she described in a memorable way.

She said: "After last week's escapades, I did lose a little bit of confidence. But I've got my lucky big pants on now, my apple catchers, so ready for anything today."

Where are Rebs and Abdul?

It was a much more intimate group than you might expect in the week three tent, because the competition was two bakers down.

Rebs, who had been close to being sent home last week, and Abdul were both missing, as hosts Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding explained they had a pass into the next round.

Lucas joked: "Both Rebs and Abdul are a bit under the weather this week but with your permission, we thought we'd send them both straight through to the final."

Fielding added: "Only joking, they're just going to miss a week, then hopefully they'll be back next week."

Dawn accidentally offends Matt

Dawn appeared to have a real rapport going with host Matt Lucas as he asked her what her usual activities would involve, and she replied napping.

They seemed to have found some common ground, until thinks got a little awkward...

Lucas asked: "You know where I sleep the best? In the theatre."

Dawn agreed as she shared: "What was that one that was about Boy George..."

But Lucas told her: "Taboo? I was in the original cast of it."

Dawn began to bluster and backtrack about the 2002 theatre production, as Lucas said: "Oh! I made an impression in that, didn't I?"

She was left red faced, telling the camera: "Cringe!"

Sandwich cake... but not as you know it

Viewers might have been forgiven for thinking they'd travelled back in time to cake week when the showstopper was announced: a Swedish smorgastarta, which translates as "sandwich cake".

However, the meaning is much more literal than the British Victoria sponge version, as in Sweden a mountain of sandwiches actually forms a "cake", complete with savoury icing and decoration.

Many of the finished creations were fishy in flavour and there were some truly stunning designs - but special note went to Janusz and Syabira.

Janusz recreated fish and chips with a mushy pea filling and a curry sauce icing in his sandwich cake, while Syabira looked to Malaysian flavours and decorated hers with fruit and vegetable carvings worthy of the fanciest banquet.

The Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
