Grey's Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff has offered an update on her plans to bring back an old cast member to the show.

Last month, during the Television Critics Association summer tour, Vernoff said that she was "trying to get someone back" and that it was a "real maybe".

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, the showrunner explained that it's an "ongoing effort", adding that she hopes it will happen.

"It's an ongoing effort and if I can make it happen, it'll be exciting," she shared. "And if I can't make it happen, we have other exciting things happening."

Vernoff opted not to reveal which cast member she was looking to bring back, but speculated names include Sandra Oh (Dr Cristina Yang), Sarah Drew (Dr April Kepner), and Kate Walsh (Dr Addison Montgomery).
