Haider Ackermann is the Colombian-born French fashion designer loved by Tilda Swinton and Timothée Chalamet – yes, the man behind that backless, red, halter neck outfit at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

He will be the next guest designer for Jean Paul Gaultier’s Couture collection, it has been announced today.

After Gaultier announced his retirement after 50 years in fashion in January 2020, carefully selected designers have been invited to create a collection combining their aesthetic with the legacy of the storied label.

Ackermann comes after applauded guest designed collections from Y/Project and Diesel’s Glenn Martens, and Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing, who showed last season, and celebrated Gaultier’s historic designs – from the cone bra Madona wore, to his Breton clad, muscle men sailors.

“I’ve always loved Haider’s work, especially on the tailoring,” Gaultier told WWD, of the new collaboration. “I am certain that his couture will be remarkable, and I cannot wait to discover the collection that he will present.”

Ackermann has been similarly  complimentary of the man known as fashion’s ‘enfant terrible’. “If one follows fashion, you follow Jean Paul Gaultier,” he said. “I have enormous respect for how progressive and avant-garde his work has always been. He has always pushed the envelope in culture and society as a whole, above and beyond fashion.

The collection will be shown in January, during the Spring 2023 couture collections in Paris. And there is one question on everyones mind – after taking to British Vogue’s cover this month, will Chalamet go one step further and make his runway debut?
