Award-winning actor Hal Holbrook has died at the age of 95.

His personal assistant, Joyce Cohen, confirmed on Monday night that he had passed away at his Beverly Hills home on January 23.

Best known for his decades-long role as American novelist Mark Twain, Holbrook also starred in a string of critically acclaimed films including All the President’s Men and Into the Wild.

Most recently, he appeared in TV series Grey's Anatomy, Bones and Hawaii Five-0.

Over the course of a career spanning more than 60 years, the Hollywood star was nominated for an Oscar and a Tony award.

His role in ‘Into the Wild’ earned him the Oscar nomination for best supporting actor in 2008.

At 82, Holbrook was the oldest performer ever to receive such recognition.

He also scooped five Emmys, including for his portrayal of US President Abraham Lincoln in the 1974 mini series Lincoln.

He later played Preston Blair in the 2012 film of the same name.

Holbrook’s solo show ‘Mark Twain Tonight!’, that he both directed and starred in for six decades before retiring in September 2017, won him the best actor Tony in 1966.

Tributes have poured in to the screen icon since his death was confirmed.

Hot Fuzz and Baby Driver writer Edgar Wright tweeted: “The estimable Hal Holbrook has passed away, but what work he leaves behind.

“Loved his performances in The Fog, All The President’s Men, Magnum Force, Creepshow, Capricorn One, The Star Chamber, Wild In The Streets & Into The Wild, among many many others.”

US comedian Dan Cook shared a photo of himself with Holbrook, writing: “RIP Hal you will be so missed. A gentleman and a powerhouse performer.”

And IMDb special correspondent Dave Karger commented: “I remember seeing Into the Wild for the first time in 2007 and being so touched by Hal Holbrook’s performance. A few months later I watched it again and as soon as he appeared on screen I burst into tears.

“What a masterful cap on a phenomenal career.”
