Hollyoaks' Ellis Hollins admits "shock" at Tom and Yazz wedding revelation

From Digital Spy

Hollyoaks' New Years Eve 2020 episode has been a long time coming, having first been teased back in December 2019 in a special flashforward episode, and the scenes are almost upon as at last.

One of the big plots teased in the flashforward was a wedding between a mystery couple and fans recently discovered that the pair heading down the aisle will be Tom Cunningham (Ellis Hollins) and Yasmine 'Yazz' Maalik (Haiesha Mistry).

Actor Hollins, who has played long-standing Hollyoaks resident Tom since he was three years old, has admitted that it was "a shock" to him to discover that it was his character who was due to tie the knot in the dramatic end of year episode – but certainly not a bad one.

"It was a shock, and there's not much that surprises me in terms of storylines any more!" the actor told Inside Soap. "But I was over the moon when I heard, and even more when I realised I would get to spend more time with Haiesha.

"One funny part of it was that I had to wear the same suit as when we shot the flashforward a year ago, which was quite interesting to fit back into!"

Tom and Yazz may not have been a couple for all that long but Hollins reckons that the pair are so well-suited that time isn't an issue when it comes to them getting married.

"I suppose you could call it a shotgun wedding," he said. "However, Tom knows what he wants. He sees a lot in Yazz and vice versa, they really complement each other as well. Tom gets stressed very easily, whereas Yazz is very laid-back, which Tom needs. Tom is definitely looking forward to his wedding."

Unfortunately viewers know that the arrival of the New Year is set to bring disaster to the village as a currently unidentified character is due to end up in a body bag. But Hollins won't be drawn on whether Tom and Yazz's big day will be interrupted by the shocking events taking place.

"There's a lot going on," he teased. "And obviously in the flashforward we saw Romeo (Nightingale, played by Owen Warner) crying his eyes out at the Dog, which insinuates that something might happen, and it doesn't all go to plan.

"But you'll have to wait to find out – I can't tell you if there's something for them to worry about or not..."

Hollyoaks currently airs new episodes from Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4. Classic episodes, titled Hollyoaks Favourites, air on Fridays at 7pm on E4.
