Hollyoaks' Nikki Sanderson on long-term future of dark Maxine story

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks is going to explore the issue of women's safety in upcoming scenes when Maxine Minniver is set up on a date with Eric Foster, and a series of upsetting events unfold that sees her lose consciousness whilst walking home.

Speaking to Inside Soap about the storyline, Maxine actress Nikki Sanderson delved a little further into the details of the storyline and her character's state of mind.

"Maxine wakes up in the morning at her flat, but she can't remember what happened or how she got home," Sanderson explained. "Scott and Theresa turn up, and when Maxine looks in the mirror she sees the word 'Slag' written across her head in her own lipstick!

"She's so upset and so angry at herself for getting in such a state. And she has to go to the hospital to see if there's been any sign of an attack, physical or sexual – fortunately that's not the case, to her absolute relief. And then Maxine starts having flashbacks of what potentially happened..."

The actress also explained that Dave Chen-Williams makes things worse by blaming Maxine for being drunk, rather than the person who attacked her.

"This is not Maxine's fault," Sanderson added when asked what message she wants viewers to take from the storyline. "This didn't happen because of what she wore, where she went, who she was with or how she looked. It's nothing to do with Maxine — it's about the bad person doing it."

She continued: "Maxine's a fighter, she never gives in! I think she will find out who is going after her. But she'll have to be very clever about it, and she'll have to get the evidence together to be able to prove her suspicions are right.

"We can't forget that Maxine has had some horrific times in her life, like her abusive relationship with Patrick, so this is really just the beginning – there's a lot more to come. It's a brilliant issue-led storyline, every department has been working hard, and hopefully it will send out a positive message to our viewers."

Hollyoaks streams first on All 4, with new episodes dropping each weekday morning. The show airs Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, and at 7pm on E4. Selected omnibus episodes are available via Amazon Prime Video.
