iCarly star Jennette McCurdy has said that she “resents” her career and feels “embarrassed” over her past roles.

The former Nickelodeon actor – who starred as Sam Puckett on the hit children’s sitcom – opened up about why she quit acting on the season two premiere of her podcast Empty Inside.

Speaking to Mom star Anna Faris, McCurdy said: “I resent my career in a lot of ways. I feel so unfulfilled by the roles that I played and felt like it was the most just cheesy, embarrassing… I imagine there’s a very different experience to be had with acting if you’re proud of your roles.”

iCarly ran for five seasons on the children’s network between 2007 and 2012. Following that, McCurdy reprised her role as Sam in the spin-off show Sam & Cat, which also starred Ariana Grande.

The 28-year-old added: “I’m so ashamed of the parts I’ve done in the past. I get that this answer is super unlikeable.”

She also recalled being rejected for an audition for the 2005 film Because of Winn-Dixie at the age of 10, because her agent said she was “homely” and not an “ethereal beauty”.

“I quit a few years ago because I initially didn’t want to do it,” she said. “My family didn’t have a lot of money, and this was the way out, which I actually think was helpful in driving me to some degree of success.”

It is not yet confirmed whether McCurdy will join the iCarly revival currently in the works at Paramount Plus.
